What confuses me is that the press release for 505 credited Guy Fauchon as “Vortigan”, and IMDB credits him as “First Dark One.” However, Vortigan’s name is never even said. Why would the press release even give him that specific name? Unless someone goofed and accidentally spoiled his identity in the press release.
dunno about the name, but I think Guy Fauchon is just a warm body because they hadn’t cast Nimue yet. I’m not sure about that name, though.

Yeah it’s giving him a specific name in the press release that’s throwing things off. If he was just standing in for Nimue’s actress, then why didn’t they just credit him as “First Dark One” instead to keep it vague?

Certainly wouldn’t be the first time, LOL! 🙄

wait, was this the first dark one? or was this just a dark one?
WHAT IF: The woman he loved, Nimue, is the dark one, right? And when he said you took her away, he was talking to the darkness inside her, not the person. And his plan was to kill the dark one, but he couldn’t because he loved her. And so she turned him into a tree. That’s what we are talking right?
You wouldn’t know this (because you haven’t seen Star Wars), but you just made a Star Wars parallel!
When a good person embraces darkness, and becomes evil, and takes on a new persona, their loved ones say to the evil persona “You killed” that person. As in: the evil persona destroyed the good person they used to be.
That is a VERY Star Wars way to look at this! 😀

I am convinced…that Merlin’s first love and the Dark One we saw are both Nimue, who was Merlin’s love
The way the first Dark One moved — and, of course, the mask — reminded me of Valka from How to Train Your Dragon 2. So yeah, themes of dragons and lost love.

Did it look to anyone else as if Merlin was preparing to plunge the dagger into his own chest? The Dark One’s goal in turning him into a tree might have been to keep him from another suicide attempt. It would be in keeping with Rumpel’s talk in this episode about how the Dark One host always wants to use the power to protect his or her loved ones.

Something I completely forgot about. We saw a similar use of tear magic back in “The Apprentice.” Rumple empowered his dagger with Anna’s tear to break Merlin’s enchantment protecting the hat.

So, going by this “using the venom to make the anti-venom” logic, could it be possible that the enchantment was also cast with a similar tear (belonging to someone who faced their inner darkness, and turned away)?
Yeah, that Dark One was totally Merlin’s lost lover.
What do I think of Merlin? Cute and sassy and I love him a little bit.
That mask…Dr. Doom. But, yeah. Nimue is totally the first Dark One.
