I haven’t posted really anything in a very long time but I am very entertained by all of your theories. I am really enjoying this season so far but my only problem is in trying to do my own predictions of what might happen with the Emma/Merlin/Arthur/Excalibur storyline. There are like 25 different versions of each individual legend so trying to figure out which way they might take the story (and, of course, twist it) is mind-boggling. Then you throw in Hades and all the possibilities with Greek Mythology and my brain is just fried.
[adrotate group="5"]October 27, 2015 at 1:02 pm #311034RumplesGirlKeymasterIt’s so hilarious watching the fans beg Elliot Knight and Adam and Eddy to let Merlin stay on the show forever! He’d be a marvelous addition, but surely they realize he will unfortunately be gone by 5×11?
I’ve been singing Uptown Funk all morning because of this gif set.

(way too many good ones to direct quote) After reading everyone’s posts, thought I’d add another monkey wrench into the pot … Nimue is also known as the Lady of the Lake (aka Lancelot’s mother – his full name is Lancelot du Lac i.e. Lancelot of the Lake) and is the creator of Excalibur which was given to Merlin to find the the one true king to rule and bring harmony to the world. So if as suggested, what if this escaped darkness from the Underworld was forged into Excalibur, raged havoc and took control of Nimue; then Merlin seeing no other way to control the darkness from taking over the world, breaks off the end of Excalibur to create the DO dagger tethering the darkness to it. And, as we saw, he is unable to destroy the DO because it is Nimue. (side note, since everyone is OUAT is related, Lancelot may be Merlin’s son. LOL)

perhaps…but isn’t Merlin centuries old…and he’s been a tree….for centuries? We don’t know how old Lance is but..hmmm…maybe dark ones have long gestation periods?
EDIT: Posted this in filming thread but I guess it can go here too:
So I was rewatching the scene wear Merlin gets rooted to the ground by the dark one and…. I THINK the Dark One is wearing the same clothing Emma is wearing here:

And I THINK the same clothing Emma is wearing there is also being worn by the female Dark One we see riding in the cart with Ginny.
I keep rewatching but cannot be sure. Just throwing it out there.

Maybe Merlin tried to get Nimue to let go of the darkness, but before that could happen, Vortigan killed her and became the next Dark One. And maybe Vortigan was Merlin’s friend or something which would explain why he couldn’t kill him. I mean, if this is Nimue, then it’s gonna feel a bit odd if she was just killed and succeeded by a random DO we never hear about.
But it probably is Nimue cause that’s the kind of thing they would do.
October 30, 2015 at 1:45 pm #311327Jiminy’s JournalParticipantWhat if Dr. Doom!Dark One is the untethered Darkness taken corporeal form? Rumpel warned Belle that she doesn’t want to be around the Dark One when no one else is home, as his heart was going black, and he was dying. Also, in “The Miller’s Daughter,” when Rumpel was dying, the name on the dagger was fading away, which led to Cora changing her plan to trying to become the next Dark One. And, if she knew what would happen, maybe only Merlin can control the untethered Darkness, due to being the Sorcerer? Even she could have feared the untethered Darkness!
This would explain why Merlin accused Dr. Doom!Dark One of killing his lost love. We don’t necessarily know long Dr. Doom!Dark One has been around, after all. Rumpel was the Dark One for, what, 300 years?

And there’s also a Vertigern/Merlin connection, detailed here. Very briefly: Vertigern was trying to build a castle, but it kept falling apart. So, he eventually turned to sorcerers for advice.
“They advised that the ground should be sprinkled with the blood of a child born to a human mother and a father from the ‘other world’.”
They found the child who fit the bill: you guessed it, Merlin. Merlin convinced Vertigern the plan with the blood sprinkling was bogus. Instead, he said the castle kept falling apart because of an underground lake with two dragons that mostly slept, but sometimes woke up, fought, and destroyed the castle in the process. Vertigern got his workers to check, and sure enough, there they were. After the red dragon beat the white one, he returned to his lair and went back to sleep, and the castle could be built.
