This episode definitely channeled Doctor Who with a lot of timey-winey-ness, and many kudos to Keb for clearing up all the timeline issues, but, it still leaves, I believe, a big plot hole regarding Merlin.   During the 5 years ago period (i.e. 5 years +28 frozen years & 6 weeks), Arthur claims that Merlin spoke to him from within the “tree” – so that means that Merlin was already enchanted into tree form prior to Emma’s birth and the casting of the initial DC (1983).  That being so, how could Merlin have appeared to the Apprentice back in 1983 prior to Emma’s birth & DC casting to discuss the issue with the Author (Isaac), then appear in our world to Emma in 1989 (during the curse years), and still be MIA (or in the tree) in Camelot & FTL during the 6 weeks ago period??  Am I just still confused or did I trip on a plot hole?

I think it will turn out that Merlin can project images of himself to whomever he chooses (ie: Emma seeing him in a movie theater and then very quickly vanishing). He’s not there there, he’s just…astral projecting.

Merlin’s appearance to Emma is the only weird bit I see–because the communication with the apprentice took place entirely by magic. At least the bit we saw.

And I think the puffy blue smoke thingy is just foreshadowing that Merlin can project and take on any appearance he wants. (squirrel!)

I am thinking that THE FIRST DARK ONE is who is actually stuck in the tree …. he has just FOOLED Arthur by telling him he would be the KING of CAMELOT . 1st DO sent ARTHUR on the path to his own destruction .

Merlin trapped the FIRST DARK ONE in the tree. Merlin was in the room with the swirling mass that the apprentice went to talk to him……. not trapped but in another realm /plateau/ plain of existence. I think that is why Merlin was seen by Emma … and I think there were more visits and activities that we do not know about yet.
