October 21, 2013 at 12:42 am #217600RumplesGirlKeymasterDoes this mean Hook is originally from our world or was the costume just easier?

It would be intriguing if Killian were from our world, but no, I think the costume is just similar to that of a navy officers in the 1800s. After all, we did see glimpses of him on a flying ship, making me think he was a member of the crew aboard said enchanted ship. That makes me think he hails from a magical realm.

The Napoleonic era naval uniforms are going to be the most recognized by average viewers familiar with work such as Master and Commander, Horatio Hornblower etc. Napoleonic uniforms also are perhaps the most elaborate and fairy tale-esque, perhaps because the Grimm brothers were of the same era. In addition the red costume that Rumple decks David out in before he sets off after Snow is also consistent with this same era. The uniforms worn by Victor Frankenstein’s father and brother are also based on 19th century uniforms. The liveries worn by the royal servants in the kingdoms that we’ve seen so far are in the 18th century style. The soldiers we’ve seen have so far been Medieval through and through.

October 21, 2013 at 3:23 am #217635isabells1990ParticipantOk, I thought he’ll be in the Navy, so not a surprise for me. Typical path, good boys become bad boys. The promo makes be believe that Peter Pan had some impact on Hook becoming a pirate, like that kid knows EVERYTHING! So obviously going with that thinking, Peter needed Hook for something in the future. I might be wrong. One thing I don’t like about this episode (I might be convinced otherwise when I actually see it) is this whole Emma – Hook kiss. To me, Hook is only the obstacle for Emma’s and Neal happiness, especially after the last night’s episode. I like Hook (mostly his face, I know how vein! ;)) and I’d prefer him to be more independent character, not just Emma’s replacement for something until the time Neal finds her. Did I like the promo? I liked the Navy part, didn’t like the kissing part, it looks hot! But I am afraid of consequences after it :/

October 21, 2013 at 4:23 am #217641sweetgrassParticipantIn my line of work as a military historian one gets familiar with military uniforms. In this case I would say our young captain is a junior officer aboard a naval ship. The cut of the uniform is similar to Royal Navy uniforms worn during the Napoleonic era from the late 1790s to 1815. His shoulder boards have three pips with no tassels which has no equiv. in the RN. An educated guess would place him as a junior officer perhaps a lieutenant (although the possibility exists that he is a midshipman i.e. an officer in training apprenticed to an experienced naval officer whose ranks were drawn from the gentry and non-inheriting sons of aristocratic families).
You know I’ve always found it funny that Hook is three hundred years before Snow White’s time. It seems to me that Hook should have happened after Snow White’s time. The naval suit is anachronistic given OUAT timeline.
Keeper of Hook and Emma's smoldering first kiss, a certain Pirate's sauciness, the Evil Queen's snarkiness, Grumpy's gruffness and a drop of true love to make it all go down smooth.
