Anyone else thinking that maybe part of why Hook gets such polarized reactions, is because he is more ‘relatablel’ in his actions? By relatable I mean, he hasn’t got magic, so there isn’t any OTT theatrics involved in his crimes & therefore there’s no putting blinkers on as to what he’s actually doing?
Example of this would be-
Hook hitting Belle (& no I don’t it was o.k for him to do so, tho I can understand why he did it), he physically touched (hit) Belle, causing her to lose consciousness = unforgivable, because it is relatable.Rumple force slamming Ruby, he used magic to physically throw Ruby into the ground, causing her to lose consciousness = no mention/ problems with it, because it isn’t relatable.
There are a bunch of other example s I could draw from, but these are the most recent.
I was just thinking about it after reading some heated arguments online & thinking that if you add up the sum of what other characters (Regina, Rumple, Cora in-particular) have done & what Hook has done, the arguments that are presented against Hook are really weak. Of course it doesn’t help that Rumple’s following is MASSIVE, as is Rumbelle’s & Hook happens to have gone after both lol π & Now Bae is back & no doubt will be in the thick of it, so Bae & SwanFire (or what ever they call themselves) fans will not be impressed with Hook’s presence either π
I also wonder if he’s around next season, if this Hook hate will lessen to a large extent, as his attempts fail & he is ‘distracted’ by other matters & Rumple, Belle & Bae fans can be assured he isn’t as big of a threat as they 1st thought (I mean Rumple is safe & wont go anywhere) π
[adrotate group="5"]April 21, 2013 at 8:50 am #187482morahaParticipantI think you could be right, Surayya. I was asking myself why Hook/Killian gets very good and very bad reactions at the same time for a long time now.
Given the fact that Rumple hurt and doublecrossed so many people for such a long time – he should be the one getting bad reactions and scoldings. We know why he did most of these things and it’s very good to have someone like Rumple in the show, don’t get me wrong. But it seems that people count one hit with his fist/hand from Hook a lot more than Rumples magically + physically inflicted wounds. So it seems you’re right with your theory.April 21, 2013 at 9:01 am #187483PheeParticipantYou may be onto something with that explanation. It’s certainly interesting how differently people perceive Hook. Though just for the record…

…I’ve adored Rumple since day one, I ship both Rumbelle and SwanFire, and I also love Hook and can’t wait to see more of him, (even if it includes some CaptainSwan).

Oh, I didn’t mean Rumple, Rumbelle, Bae & SwanFire fans all do dislike him- just that from the very beginning, Hook was introduced as being on the 1 track- revenge on Rumple & that cant have helped to ingratiate him on many of those particular fans- if he had been out to get say Regina for instance, there may not have been quite so much ‘wide spread’ dislike, as it’s focused on 1 person & effecting 1 ship, rather than 1 person, effecting 2-3 ships π
I too have nothing against any of the characters really- Cora, Neal (& GOAT) are my least fav, but I don’t hate any of them & that includes Rumple & Regina (Regina I have come the round on most- I still think she is twisted, but I actually really do like her now, much more than I ever thought I would tbh) π
April 21, 2013 at 9:42 am #187485surayyaParticipantI’m glad others think it makes sound logical sense.
I’ve only really been ‘stalking’ sites for the last couple of weeks after taking a break, so hadn’t really run across anything until then regarding Hook reactions & WOW, there have been some daytime soap worthy reactions lol π π .April 25, 2013 at 10:49 pm #188775SlurpeezParticipantHe’s back! π

It also could be the ship thing, but there is one more element. Hook is a season 2 character.
People wanted to see their faves from season 1. MAP got a lot of hate too. Belle was introduced in S1 as was Cora. Neal turned out to be Bae, also introduced in S1. So they weren’t as “new”.
S3 will start this all over with whatever new characters come in then.

I think you’re on the right track here with this statement– I think that is key. It is how the writers wanted it to be, and it worked. They made him go after Rumple and not Regina, therefore, they wanted that fan angst. Most people just watch the show and are fans of the show and don’t really have character preferences, so from that perspective, I can see the majority leaning toward rooting for Rumple rather than Hook because that is how it was written; his revenge driven life.
Also, I do believe because even in the first season Rumple was written generally for empathy and relate-ability. I agree with the general inference you pose for sure, but in this case for Rumple. Generally people give characters more of a pass if they are easy to relate to. Early on in season 1 I could tell the series was about Rumple and his son. The first pre-Dark One ep, I realized that, and I think it changed the way I watched the show.Don’t get me wrong, I don’t give him a free pass for what he does and it hurts every time he’s bad lol. But I do have a whole lot of grace and sympathy for him because of everything.
That being said, I don’t hate Hook. In fact I am very much a fan of him! Swanfire does not equal hating Hook or even holding him to higher standards for me. If I personally don’t see CaptainSwan at all in the mix of each ep I watch, that is what it is. I can separate SwanFire from CaptainSwan and what others ship don’t effect my enjoyment of Hook as a character at all. Most of the people I follow on twitter and tumblr who are SwanFires would say the same. If they are hook haters because of SwanFire, I’ll unfollow. But…that has yet to happen. Not saying it doesn’t, but I think the more mature fans avoid that kind of petty stuff. Nothing wrong with disliking Hook as a character, but there hasn’t been any Captain Swan on screen so I don’t even understand that being the reason if someone dislikes him just because they ship Swanfire.
The way I view Hook is like a puppy dog/6 year old boy with guyliner. Seriously. He just seems so lost. After Milah was killed anyway, and Post- Milah Hook is pretty much all we have seen except 2 minutes of obnoxious prideful jerk Hook haha. π and I am sure after we see his backstory he will definitely be as relateable as the other characters we’ve come to know.
Anyway, that is where my headspace is! This is a cool subject and now I want to go read about psychology or something because this stuff intrigues me!
