So just saw this about charming’s mother. Have fun speculating!! http://www.hypable.com/2012/09/11/once-upon-a-time-season-2-what-will-happen-to-charmings-mother-ruth/

The way they worded that spoiler almost makes it sound like she’ll be in more than one ep, but who knows if that’s the case, or if they were just being vague so as to not give away which ep she’ll be in. It’d be cool if she’s in more than one though, giving her some more significance.

Ruth becomes the Lady of the Lake.
Imagine that she was mortally wounded, and Charming realized he’s guilty of causing her death. Desperate enough to make a deal? She wouldn’t be dead yet, so maybe magic could intervene and keep her alive – but the price is that she must remain the Lady of the Lake for all eternity and separated from her son….just becomes I love to see families in this show suffer. 😆
It would leave Ruth open to return from time to time to give advice to the heroes, but with a touch of family angst.

I considered that the other day, actually, but hadn’t thought the theory through properly yet…
I was wondering if Charming has always had the same sword? The one that Emma used in the finale, was that the same as what we’d previously seen him use? Was gonna look into that, but hadn’t gotten around to it. On the one hand, it’d be kind of great if Ruth becomes Lady of the Lake and gives Excalibur to her son when he’s setting out to lead the troops to take on King George. But if we’ve seen Charming with that sword already, then that theory is a bust.
Anyway, if that were the case with Ruth giving the sword to Charming, making Charming and Snow our Arthur and Guinevere, starting with this battle to take back the kingdom, I’m not sure if that would fit with the timeline, because the casting call for Lancelot made it sound like Arthur and Guinevere already existed before then: “In his tragic past, he was torn from his true love and banished from the king and country he served.” Also, they made a point of Oncieverse Lancelot having a British accent, so I doubt our Arthur and Guinevere would be American.
I do like the idea of Ruth being saved from death by being turned into a being like Lady of the Lake though. Guess they could get around those issues if they made Lady of the Lake more of a position that someone can hold, as opposed to one single person. In that case, Ruth could become one of the Ladies of the Lake, just not the specific one who gave Excalibur to Arthur, (and maybe that one was Snow’s mother, going back to my original Lady of the Lake theory). Perhaps?

I’m glad we’re gonna see Chip again. That should be a sweet moment, when Belle discovers that Rumple kept that cup. 🙂

September 14, 2012 at 11:29 am #153927lilredParticipantzlfh4 – Exactly! The balance needed to be restored from Charming killing the siren, and it ends up being his mother.
I’m pretty sure Charming has been using the same sword since the Shepherd. But, if they are setting up Ruth to make an appearance every once and awhile – I could see her giving swords out to different characters – Emma or Henry included. I can’t really factor Arthur into the equation yet but maybe his story/character will only be lightly referenced next season and we won’t get his story until season 3 or later.
September 14, 2012 at 12:13 pm #153928hjbauParticipantThe pommel is different on Charming’s sword in the pilot. They may have just decided to make it less ornate. Snow is also not wearing Charming’s mother’s ring until Ep 3. She isn’t wearing it in the pilot in fairytale land even. Sometimes things are just like that. Other then the pommel though i think the sword is the same from then on out. I am not sure if the sword is different in Ep 2 when it follows Regina to her castle after Charming throws it. I will have to check later.
September 14, 2012 at 11:55 pm #153834zlfh4ParticipantAs far as the sword goes wasn’t the whole sword supposed to be gold after King Midas touched it? Or did that change after he dropped it in the lake?
September 15, 2012 at 1:24 am #153836hjbauParticipantThat sword that was turned to gold is a completely different sword that is only shown in that one episode. I always thought that they would just melt that sword down and sell it for the gold. A sword made of gold isn’t really usefully anyways.
This is the gold sword from Ep 6.
But at the end of Ep 6 Charming is wearing his regular sword because it is the one he has in the forest when he meets Snow.
Pic of the sword in the case from Ep 22.
The pommel is different in Ep 1 though. I have no idea if that means something. I think they just changed it to make it look a little more common like which i actually like better.
