Good news for those of you looking forward to Once Upon a Time spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: the new series has already been given more episodes!

The series was originally picked up for a limited 13-episode run, but according to Entertainment Weekly, ABC is “about to add some additional episodes,” for a total run that will amount to greater than the original 13 episodes, though less than a standard 22.

As you probably know, the vision for Once Upon a Time is for it to be a self-contained, carefully plotted mini-series, a la American Horror Story. These new episodes will not changes that vision: instead, whatever number ABC and showrunners Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis agree on now will be the total for the season, and Adam and Edward will carefully structure the story to fit the order.

That said, if Wonderland does well, it won’t be a one season wonder. The hope is that it will get renewed so the writers can tell a different self contained story each season, not unlike American Horror Story. The plan as of now would be to use the same world and characters each year, “if the audience responds and people love these characters,” but to make each season its own story.

The comparison Entertainment Weekly draws is to 24, which makes sense — while watching every season of 24 gave you a fuller picture of the characters, it was easy to drop in at the beginning of any given season and follow the plot, which is very different from a show like Once Upon a Time, where each season builds on the last.

Sounds like a cool concept they’re working with. Hope it does catch on and last more than 1 season.

Definitely loved to hear that. Now if only we got more spoilers about the series… 😀

They’re heading to ComicCon so hopefully we get some goodies on both shows!

I hope the panels are separate. In ATX Festival Adam and Eddy were there for both shows, but they ended up being asked almost completely OUAT questions because, well that’s the show we know a lot more about and have characters that we already care about. I wanted to know more about OUATinWL and that sucked. 🙁
