We’ve been told and shown that the Darkness is like a parasite that causes the host to have actual symptoms.
Including not needing to sleep. If Hook’s a Dark One, he shouldn’t have been needing to sleep, so I guess he’s just not noticed that he’s awake 24/7 without getting sleepy ever?
Lots of knitting apparently.
For me, this is really the big one. We know they’ve been back in SB for several days (minimum) and he’s never once noticed that he doesn’t need sleep? And that’s he not getting tired?
We can fan wank away the voices. The ability to do magic is trickier (for me) because magic is tied to emotions, especially dark magic. We’ve been shown that pretty consistently over the years. When Emma first became the Dark One and was moving through the EF in 501, the magic she did was during moments of anger (choke holding the merchant who wanted money; Merida). Hook’s been plenty angry lately. And yet no magic shoots from his fingers, lights don’t explode over heard, object don’t move. Those are all telltale signs of someone doing magic without realizing it. It’s called forshadowing and it’s pretty gosh darn important in narratives. But the show doesn’t do that. They just spring SHOCK! on you during big reveals with no set up. The fact that Hook hasn’t felt different/hasn’t noticed any changes in his habits/hasn’t had even one moment of sudden magic is super problematic because there’s no set up to him being another Dark One.

He could always take up crochet since it’s “easier”.

LOL This!!! Especially after the big deal the characters, Hook most of all, made out of Emma not sleeping and making dreamcatchers.
You’d think he would have been like “ooh, look, I haven’t slept in 78 hours, and I feel fine. You know who else never sleeps? Hrmmmm…”
We’ve been told and shown that the Darkness is like a parasite that causes the host to have actual symptoms. Emma was treated like a patient with a terminal illness in Camelot. The voices, the fear, the random bouts of magic, all of those things were symptomatic of having the Darkness inside her.
Don’t get me started. For the last 4 seasons, the show has been drawing parallels between the DO curse and addiction (Rumple’s arc), and the DO and mental illness (Emma’s arc in this season). Now we are being told that if the person isn’t “aware” that they are “dark,” they would act, by and large, as usual.
Essentially — “What do you mean you have a mental illness? SNAP OUT OF IT!” or “What do you mean you have a chemical dependency that has rearranged your neural chemistry? YOUR WILL IS WEAK!”
Thanks, OUAT, once again, for so sensitively handling complex psychosocial issues.
Yippee ki-yay.

If I was on the writing team, I’d put it this way:
It looks to me as if people with unresolved issues are more vulnerable to dark influence. The dark spirit strengthens their fears and hatreds, making sleep impossible — which in turn changes their personalities and behaviours — but it also sustains their bodies through what would otherwise be terminal sleep deprivation. Hook has dealt with his issues, so he sleeps soundly and doesn’t show signs of dark influence.
Thoughts? Comments?

Logical, well thought out. Perfectly fine. But, the issue is that at the end of the day they aren’t giving us any sort of in universe explanation. We have to make things up to try and rationalize their plot
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 17, 2015 at 6:12 pm #312769MatthewPaulModeratorIf we ever get an in-show explanation, I expect it to be along the lines of “Emma used her own magic to shield Hook from noticing the symptoms of being a Dark One.” How she did so is anyone’s guess.

That’s what I’m expecting, actually. An entire scene of Emma handwaving (literally) all these inconsistencies before she cast the Curse in Camelot. The problem is that it’s so….well, it’s handwavey.
*insert long winded speech about fantasy and world building and how it’s not anything goes and how lack of rules means I stop caring since there is nothing to grab ahold of*
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 17, 2015 at 8:13 pm #312776kpercymanParticipantI read somewhere that why Hook didn’t know he was the DO will be explained. I expect it to be handwaving some foo powder like substance. Possibly given to Emma by Merlin.
Emma was able to cast the curse because Hook can’t die and she squashed his heart. Guessing here. Hope that is explained as well. Unless magic beans were falling from the sky.

if that’s the case once the darkness is gone, Hook will most likely die. As we all suspect will happen.

Did Emma transfer his immortality into Hook or what was that about?
PLOT HOLE PLOT HOLE PLOT HOLE AND ER PLOT HOLE.
Deep sigh.
I never would have guessed this twist. You know why? Because it is a plot hole.
They better explain all of the above in the next episode!
