You know, I just had a thought. I think that’s another reason why Rumple’s prices are so high. When people come to him, they are looking for an easy way out. They no longer want to deal or take responsibility for their own problems. So, if he’s going to make their problem just “go poof!” and disappear, then they’re going to have to pay for it.
I think you may be on to something. 😉 All of the people that Rumpel demanded their first child as payment wanted the easy way out. Cinderella wanted to be a princess, Charming’s mother was willing to give away her own flesh and blood for a farm, and God only knows what Cora asked of Rumpel. 🙄 These people asked for the world, so Rumpel made sure that they would pay with the thing that meant the world to them.

As he did, if he lost his son because of something to do with the Dark One curse.
He knows there are consequences to wanting a magical solution to your big problem. He lived it. So he always makes sure people know up front that there’s a price to pay. Zoso never afforded him that courtesy, he didn’t know that he’d have to pay a huge price, he thought it’d just get him what he wanted.
So if these people are desperate and dumb enough to still make the deal, even when he’s told them there’s a price, then that’s on them. Not like he didn’t warn ’em.
It’s kinda like he’s trying to keep some sort of karmic balance. He HAS to make his deals, whether it’s an OCD thing where he can’t help himself, or it’s just because people won’t leave him alone and keep asking him for stuff. So if he HAS to do it, at least he can try and do it in a somewhat moral way, (look at me rationalising baby stealing, oh Rumpy, what you do to me LOL).

He only became the Dark One to save his boy. He deserted the Ogre Wars like anyone one who was drafted to any war would. Who wants to be forced to go to war? He is evil but nevertheless because of his need to save his boy he felt aquiring power was the only way to do it. He was tricked by Zoso, the former Dark One to take his life and his place. He takes first borns because first borns go to war. Going on that theory if he takes all of FTL’s first borns no one will go to war for the ones seeking the first borns but go to Rumple and strike a deal for them.
Bear with me on this part of the theory. Rumple acquires the first born because the first born usually achieve military service first among the civilian population. By getting all of them when war comes along everyone of drafting age belongs to Rumple. In order to get those draftees they will have to go to him and of course make a deal. Deals always benefit Rumple and no one else. What if he says you can have all of the first borns but after the war; never wage war ever again and have peace all across the land. Now remember it is a mistake to go back on a deal with Rumple and Rumple will always honor a deal. If you do go back ona a deal it will be for another deal that may end up with a much worse result than if you had honored the first one. Thus you should always honor his first deal and never make another deal to get out of the first one made.

Does anyone have any theories on what this vortex could be? Personally, I think it's Oz. But some others think it may be Neverland, and the green vortex is actually Tinkerbelle.

That’s my theory as well. I think Rumpel made a deal with the fairies to send him to Neverland, but something went wrong and he ended up in Oz instead. That may explain his hatred of the nuns. Mr. Gold’s grudges are always inspired by something that happened in Fairytale land. He hated Moe French because of what happened to Belle, and he probably hates the nuns because of something horrible they did to Bae.

I’ve noticed that he rarely actually goes to someone to make a deal. They all come to him.

I like the Oz theory. Green vortex=the emerald city in my head. Though, if it is Tinkerbell, my 2 year old will have a cow. Tinkerbell is ALL the rage in my house right now. 😆

Wow! It makes sense to explain his hate of fairies and his disdain for Storybrooke and Regina. He makes the best of it until Emma shoes up and sees an opportunity.April 18, 2012 at 1:43 pm #142768lissyParticipantSince Rumpel takes on two different personas (Beast and Rumpel) I wonder which story line the writers are going to follow when it comes down to the end of the series. This is how the two original grim stories end….
Rumpel = Rumpelstiltskin “in his rage drove his right foot so far into the ground that it sank in up to his waist; then in a passion he seized the left foot with both hands and tore himself in two.” Other versions have Rumpelstiltskin driving his right foot so far into the ground that he creates a chasm and falls into it, never to be seen again. In the oral version originally collected by the brothers Grimm, Rumpelstiltskin flies out of the window on a cooking ladle.
Beast = His curse is broken by Belle’s true love kiss and they live happily ever after.
Rumpels story is quite gruesome…I hope that doesn’t happen! I know the writers always tweak stories, but it seems like they take a similar path. Maybe it will be a mixture of both?

I understand what you are saying but is Rumple taking on the persona of the beast or is his character replacing the beast. The same can be said of the cinderella story except he replaced her with himself by killing her and then granting her wish with stipulations. there is an apples to oranges argument here but in the Beauty in the Beast case they simply inserted Rumple instead of introducing a whole new character. The beast and Rumple are one and the same to me in this case. Red was a character who took on the persona of the wolf simply because she was the wolf and so was Granny.

I agree. In the OUAT universe, Rumpel and the Beast are the same person with the same destiny.
