I’m not afraid to look at the Dark Side of our lives (Read up on the Vasalisa Story…).
I know that story. It’s one of the Stories featured in Women who Run with the Wolves. I was thinking during the last episode, though I knew it was highly unlikely, that it would have been so cool if the old powerful one Bae was seeking would be Baba Yaga. I still think it would be awesome to see her in FTL. 😀
As for Rumpelstiltskin’s ability to see into the future, I think if he does have that power, then I think he can only see future of others or the big picture, I don’t think he can see his own.
I agree he is making progress. I thought the fact he didn’t just kill Kathryn was a sign of that. I think it’s because the Dark Magic that corrupted him doesn’t have the same hold on him in Storybrooke and his humanity has a better chance of taking control back.

And I won’t apologize for liking Rumple so much. I just do … He is not pretty, not sexy, and those teeth (Eeesh!), but he is a compelling character. I’m not afraid to look at the Dark Side of our lives (Read up on the Vasalisa Story…). The writers have shown us he’s able to learn and grow. We haven’t seen much of that from Regina yet : She’s stuck, and may be a lost cause. If she’s a Sociopath, as Emma labeled her, she may indeed be a lost cause. We’ll see how it plays out. The best scenario would be for everyone to find their happy ending — even Regina.
I agree. I don’t like having to constantly apologize for liking a fictional character on a television show. I like Rumpel because he’s deep, complex and interesting. I love learning about his backstory and I love how he plays such a crucial part nearly all of the show’s fairytales. I like dark stories. I like dark characters. I like that he’s a villain, and yet, I also love that he’s shown signs of humanity. I’m not going to apologize for liking a interesting character and having to constantly defend a fictional character is unnecessary.

I like that Rumple/Gold is both good and evil. I like having that balance in a character. I’d actually be disappointed if the writers decided to go one way or the other with his character. His character shows that even good men can make terrible mistakes. The only difference here is that his mistake led to extreme tragedy.

Women Who Run with Wolves was a wonderful book! Saved my life back in the 1990s. I didn’t realize I was so hungry for a tv show that took the old fairy tales and put them center stage! I love it! I was hoping the witch in the Hansel and Gretl episode would be Baba Yaga, but they never really called her that–though she could have been. I’ll be she shows up at some point. She’s too big not to–and she’d give Regina a run for her money! And Rumple, too, for that matter.
And yes–I’m glad you pointed that out. Mr Gold IS Rumple, but in Storybrooke, the Dark One Curse doesn’t have the same hold on him, so he’s free to develop his own personality and talents. That’s nice to see, too. He’s much less flashy and flamboyant than Rumple, and that’s ok too. He’s finding his own way to handle problems. Some things he learned from his Rumple days; Some things come back from his Spindleshanks (Pre-curse Rumple)–Those LIGHT and Hopeful parts.
I’m so sad there are only 3 shows left to the season. What will I do the rest of the summer?
April 28, 2012 at 9:49 am #144415PriceofMagicParticipantAnyone notice how Rumpel’s voice changes the more evil he becomes. He had his normal voice in desperate souls then in the return when he said “even mutes can draw a picture” it went into the voice that Rumpel had from the beginning of the series. When Belle kissed him, it briefly went back to his normal voice and generally when he was around Belle his voice wasn’t as sing songy as it was normally. Anyone agree? Could the loss of both Bae and Belle have pushed Rumpel over the edge?
All magic comes with a price!

Yes, definitely. We heard a little bit of it after Rumple killed the maid. As I see it, his regular voice and manner indicates his humanity. The more he gives in to the magic and the curse, the less human he becomes. After he lost Bae I think Rumple went a little (a lot?) crazy. When he was a man, he was constantly afraid and tried to shrink and make himself invisible — shoulder’s stooped, eyes downcast, voice quiet. When he became all powerful he became the exact opposite — flamboyant and loud and in-your-face.
What I love is how willing he was to be vulnerable and lose that icy facade when he thought he was facing Bae.

Yes, I noticed that too. The more the power of the Dark One begins to take hold, the higher his voice becomes. Even Zoso (after Rumpel stabbed him) had a high-pitched voice. He giggled in a similar manner as Rumpel does.

Oh, that book saved my life just a few years ago! I always turn back to it whenever I feel lost, you know?! Vasalisa is one of my favourite stories too. And I recently found out there’s a Grimm’s story very similar to Vasalisa, The Brave. It’s called Mother Holle (if you don’t know it yet, as myself had never heard of it, take a look here – http://goo.gl/CZYOF). It would be lovely to see something like that in OUAT!
And back to Mr. Gold/Rumple: I’ve never thought of how being far from his Dark One self could set him free to try and become a better man. Makes a lot of sense. I’m just not convinced of his intentions yet (as I explained a few posts ago, about he just wanting to find and apologizing to Bae or if he realised all the harm he’s caused, etc etc etc…). But as Vasalisa said, just 3 episodes to go, so I guess we’ll be getting more Gold and then, we’ll be left with our thoughts and questions and hopes and no stories for some time (oh god, who invented the concept of seasons? whyyy?).

Saved mine 8 years ago. 😀
I wrote in the Red Riding Hood Thread of how Ruby Reminds me of the book. I don’t want to sidetrack this thread but you can find the Ruby thread below

April 29, 2012 at 12:46 am #144546JosephineParticipantI’ve seen this mentioned before somewhere here, that Mr. Gold/Rumple is reminicient of Severus Snape from Harry Potter. Throughout the entire series, until his final moments in the last book, you never knew what side he was really on. It was the most interesting and perplexing thing about the series. His loyalty to Lily’s memory was behind everything he did, similar to Rumple’s situation regarding Bae (and to an extent Belle). Will we ever truly know what side Rumple is really on? The big difference between the two characters for me, though, is that I was never a fangirl of Snape. Being a teacher, I despised the way he treated his students. No matter what side he was on, I could never forgive him for this. However, I have no problem trying to rationalize away squashing poor cart drivers and killing mute maids. 😕
Another note, I was rewatching part of “Heart of Darkness” and caught myself unexpectly giggling everytime Rumple giggled…something I really don’t do the first time watching probably because I’m so into the show on the first time around. This got me thinking that I really wouldn’t like this character if any other actor would have played him. Robert Carlyle is just fantastic. I was actually really surprised when I realized that he was the lead in one of my all time favorite movies The Full Monty. He’d best get nominated come Emmy time.
