I’ve seen this mentioned before somewhere here, that Mr. Gold/Rumple is reminicient of Severus Snape from Harry Potter. Throughout the entire series, until his final moments in the last book, you never knew what side he was really on. It was the most interesting and perplexing thing about the series. His loyalty to Lily’s memory was behind everything he did, similar to Rumple’s situation regarding Bae (and to an extent Belle). Will we ever truly know what side Rumple is really on? The big difference between the two characters for me, though, is that I was never a fangirl of Snape. Being a teacher, I despised the way he treated his students. No matter what side he was on, I could never forgive him for this. However, I have no problem trying to rationalize away squashing poor cart drivers and killing mute maids. ๐
Another note, I was rewatching part of “Heart of Darkness” and caught myself unexpectly giggling everytime Rumple giggled…something I really don’t do the first time watching probably because I’m so into the show on the first time around. This got me thinking that I really wouldn’t like this character if any other actor would have played him. Robert Carlyle is just fantastic. I was actually really surprised when I realized that he was the lead in one of my all time favorite movies The Full Monty. He’d best get nominated come Emmy time.
I agree with the Severus Snape comparison. Severus started out as kind of weak and pathetic. A lot like how Rumpel started out. But then he found power and decided to join the Death Eaters. Just like how Rumpel found the power of the Dark One. But after the death of Lily Evans, Severus swore to protect the last living memory of her. Her son, Harry. Rumpel did this to a certain extent with him vowing to find his son and rescue him.
Severus’s loyalties and true intentions were always unclear. And even though he was eventually revealed to be on the good side, he was still pretty frightening to the school children. His main reason for siding with the good guys is because he promised to protcet Lily’s son at all costs. His love for her outweighed anything and everything. The same goes for Rumpel. He’ll eventually find himself on the side of good, but not because he is good, but because his love for Baelfire and Belle will bring him over to the side of good.

I agree with everything you said. In the end, Mr. Gold’s love for Baelfire and Belle will indirectly bring him over to the good side. And I know that sounds kind of selfish and self-serving (ok, it is), but most of the time, it takes the love of a spouse or family member to bring people over the side of good and righteousness. Sometimes only our loved ones can provide us with the proper motivation to do what’s right. It takes love to open someone’s eyes to the truth.

You said it, Midnight Dreary! If that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes. Our loved ones help us be bigger and better than we would be or could be on our own. That’s a form of Magic in-and-of itself. ๐

Of course, sometimes that can have the opposite effect, too. where our supposed loved ones can drag us down and bring out the worst in us — like Regina and her mother.

That’s also true. Lucky for Rumpel, his loved ones have been the ones trying to steer him in the right direction. ๐
April 30, 2012 at 1:08 am #144669eternalflameParticipantWait, so why are Mr. Gold and August so friendly again? I could have sworn they hated each other.
April 30, 2012 at 1:26 am #144671theoniongirlParticipantFor one thing, I think Mr. Gold wants Emma to believe … for whatever reason. And he thinks/thought August could convince her.
For another … he set that up in his shop … having Gepetto there. ๐ฎ A way to twist the knife, after what happened in the last episode.
I do wonder, though, how he figured out so clearly who August is. Or did I miss something?

He’s Mr. Gold. He always knows. ๐

Yes, that scene was definitely a little revenge for what August did in last week’s episode.
April 30, 2012 at 2:08 am #144677vasalisaParticipant[Gold ] set that up in his shop … having Gepetto there [when August came in]. ๐ฎ A way to twist the knife, after what happened in the last episode [The Return].
Revenge, maybe. But even Wicked Step Mothers (Regina, Mr Gold and Baba Yaga included) often push us to our limits, to learn the lessons, and to ultimately do what’s best. Gold probably did set up that little scene with Gepetto in the shop, but ultimately a reunion with Pinocchio and his father IS in their best interests. No-it wasn’t the tear-stained reunion Mr Gold had with the Imposter Bae, but it was definitely a nudge in the right direction for all parties involved. Gepetto may not remember yet, and August wanted to wait until he had accomplished his mission to make Emma believe …
Gold wants Emma to believe, and she trusts August. He wanted to give August that chance. I think Mr. Gold did August a favor, (just as August did Mr Gold a favor in letting him believe that his son had come back to him). And truthfully–I’ll bet Mr Gold does feel better after his interaction with the Imposter Bae last week. He gave up Power in favor of his son. He’s rehabilitating, and sharing the wealth [She says with a wink].
