I think he is leaving the same reason he tells Regina to leave. If everyone remembers who they are, they are going to be out for blood. Gold may not be in the book but they will remember who he is. Baelfire is just a side mission at this point, survival is a primary mission. Curse breaks they can come and go from SB and everyone will be all over Gold and Regina like white on rice.
I don’t think finding Baelfire is a side mission. He’s spent hundreds and hundreds of years trying to find him. He sacrificed the previous world in order to do this. I don’t think that counts as a side mission. I think the reason why he wants to leave is so that he can finally look for his son.

All he’s interested in is his son. Which makes you wonder, depending how the finale works out and if he finds out about Belle, how will that effect his plans?
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but has anyone else noticed that as the curse is weakening he’s turning into Rumple more and more. Just in his last two encounters with Regina, I could see Rumple’s mannerisms popping out. It’s like he’s turning into a human version of Rumple, if that makes sense. He’s doing the hand flourishes and his voice is changing subtly.
Keeper of Rumplestiltskin's and Neal's spears and war paint and crystal ball.

The first thing he needs to do is to get out of dodge and that is to have the curse broken so he can be released to find Bae. That was what I meant by side mission, It more like a secondary objective which he cannot get to untill he finishes the primary.

Oh, I understand you. 😉 And you’re right. Mr. Gold can’t do anything if he’s still trapped in Storybrooke.

Well, it dependes. What exactly do you mean by that? I don’t think Belle will hinder Mr. Gold’s search for Baelfire. I’ve heard that argument before, and personally, it confuses me. 🙁 Can you elaborate please? 😀

The curse. We have only seen Emma, Henry and August come and go from SB. Emma did it twice, August and Henry once. We have never seen Gold anywhere but SB. Regina too. I’m positive that Bae is not in SB. He’s had 28 years to find him in SB and he owns the town.

What if Regina offers Belle to Rumple in a deal and he says no becase Bae is his main priority? Do you think he would be willing to set back his plans to find his son in order to help Belle? Of course right away I wanna scream “YES!” but all of his actions are for Bae and Bae only, how will Belle fit into them?

He still has the please clause to use.

I’m dying to see how Belle’s existence messes with his head and his plans. Right now he’s just got the one goal: to get out into the world and find Bae. ALL his emotions and focus are with that goal in mind. He’s probably got his bags packed, ready to leave town the instant he’s able, and then SURPRIIIIISE, your lady love lives. 😮 You’d think he’d at least have to take some time to wrap his head around that and formulate a new plan and decide if Belle can fit into his future and how. We don’t know what kind of state she’ll be in when he discovers her. If everyone ends up remembering, surely her father, and probably many other people, would try to keep them apart. So even if Mr Gold wants to be with her, and/or take her with him on his trip to find Bae, it may not be that simple.

I would guess that if the curse breaks, everyone remembers, and Regina’s life becomes a living hell because everyone’s out to get her, she’ll no longer feel the need to comply with his terms and the “please” would lose its power.

1. Who has more power? Rumpel, Evil Queen or Emma?
2. Has Mr. Gold forgotten about Baelfire?
3. How will magic effect Storybrooke?
4. How will Belle react to Mr. Gold returning to his old Dark One persona?
5. What is Mr. Gold’s end game?
6. Now that the curse is broken, is Emma still the savior? Is she still a threat?
7. Who will the main battle be between? Who are the main players?
8. How will Baelfire play into this? -
