I’ve been thinking. Since the magic Mr. Gold brought into our world was created from true love, most of the characters on the show will be able to use it. Emma (because of her love for Henry), Snow and Charming, and even Rumpel (because of his love for Belle and Baelfire). Regina however, may be the only one left out. Regina’s true love, Daniel, is dead and she killed the only other person who she really loved: Her father, Henry. Yes, she has little Henry, but since the writers chose to have Emma’s kiss revive Henry, I think that was confirmation that Regina’s kiss probably wouldn’t have worked.
I actually think it’s pretty interesting that Regina has gone from being one of the most powerful people in the world, to one of the weakest. All because of the lack of love in her life.
I completely agree. I think season 2 will be about true love and the magic it creates. 😉

Two of his obsessions being desolved into one big pot.

I think you’re right. In order to properly activate the magic of true love, one must first have the active ingredient: True love. So, it will be interesting to see who’ll be able to use the magic and who won’t. Emma, Henry, Snow and Charming will definitely be able to use it. And oddly enough, so will Mr. Gold. He has Belle and Baelfire. So, even one of the show’s villains will be able to use the magic of true love.

I think we have too. 😉 I can’t wait to see how Rumpel handles all of this. There will definitely be tons of drama, but I’ve never actually worried about the long term condition of Rumpel’s relationship with Belle. This show is obsessed with the idea of true love and happy endings, so Belle and Rumpel will get their happy ending eventually.
Someone (I forgot who, sorry) made an interesting point about how to solve the problem of Rumpelstiltskin and his lust for power. They basically argued that Rumpel must have his happy ending because he needs his own personal curse to be broken. The heroes will never be able to out-smart him or over-power him because he is the Dark One. Killing Rumpel is out of the question because all that would do is just create another Dark One. The only safe solution is for Rumpel to be cured by true love’s kiss. Belle’s kiss would destroy the Dark One’s powers once and for all, instead of just passing it down to another person.
Rumpel will always be more power than the heroes because they are basically playing by his rules. Everything the heroes have done has ended up benefiting Rumpel, either directly or indirectly. They’re damned if they, damned if they don’t. The only real solution would be for the powers of the Dark One to be vanquished in its entirety. And since killing Rumpel is out of the question, the only other option is true love. So, that very conundrum implies that Rumpel must have a happy ending.

I completely agree. The show keeps reminding us that true love is the most powerful magic in the world. It can break any curse. So, the natural solution to Rumpel’s madness would be true love. From either his son Baelfire or from Belle. Killing him would only sire a new Dark One, so true love has to be his cure.

Magic has numerous rules, prices and punishments. There are various different things that one must accomplish in order to create magic. So, it would make sense that only those who have true love in their life can use the magic of true love.

But then we really have no idea who is going to be able to do what. Magic is unpredictable, according to Regina, in our world so wouldn’t it be wonderful if it didn’t work for any of them. 😆
Keeper of Rumplestiltskin's and Neal's spears and war paint and crystal ball.

Possibly. Mr. Gold did say that he was returning what was once lost. So, those who had magic will probably simply regain their powers. AWESOME. 😀
May 31, 2012 at 7:59 am #148129thedarkoneParticipantHi guys! I’m new here and I just thought I’d give you a few thoughts on what I think of Rumpelstiltskin.
I personally see Rumpelstiltskin’s character as more of a tragic figure rather than an evil villain. Traditionally, tragedies are described as when good or decent make one fatal mistake that leads to their downfall. This is exactly what happened to Rumpelstiltskin. Before he became the Dark One, Rumpel was a good and decent man. A bit of a coward, however that doesn’t make you any less good. Most people possess some form of cowardice anyway, so I don’t fault him for that.
His wife abandons him and Bae for whatever reason (an affair, frustration or probably even death), so he’s left alone to raise a child that many don’t even believe is truly his. So from the outset, you have Rumpel already doing something that many men would refuse to do, especially given the time period they’re living in, and that’s raising a child on their own. Many would have given up their child or refused to a child whose whose paternity is under question. I feel like these are things that are conveniently overlooked when people talk about Rumpel’s character. Rumpel probably still has questions about whether or not Bae is his biological son, and yet he still created the curse and sacrificed everything just to find him.
Someone in another thread on this forum brilliantly said that if a man has the common decency to raise the child of another man, then that makes him a REAL MAN. A lot of people have no idea how difficult it is to raise a child, and given everything that Rumpel went through before he became the Dark One, I’d say he did a stellar job. UNTIL he actually became the Dark One. That’s when he screwed up.
Another thing people tend to forget is that after Rumpel became the Dark One, he saved thousands of innocent children from the Ogre Wars. That is no small thing. He ended an entire war. I think that should be highly commended. In the beginning, Rumpel meant to use his new-found powers as a source for good. Saving people, protecting his son. But the evil power of the Dark One slowly began to eat away at his goodness, at his decency. To me, I classify this as the ultimate tragedy. A good man has been lost all because he wanted to help.
