There is an interview with the two makers of the show and they mention at around 2:28 in the video that it may be when Gold hears Emma’s name in the pilot that he gets his memory back. That that may be the catalyst. So maybe his memories aren’t quite clear yet. Link.

I think it’s definitely a possibility because Regina was just recently questioning whether or not Rumpel knew. I bet those potions carried into SB like they said in the podcast. Thus, Rumpel would still have more power than the queen. Even she does not have “love potion”.

He seemed to be famiiar with her. The way he said her name indicated familiarity on his part. Hmm, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

So far, Rumpelstiltskin has been my absolute favorite. I loved him at the beginning of the season when he was just his usual creepy, giggling old self, but I fell head over hills in love with his character after watching Desperate Souls and Skin Deep.
I’m loving everyone’s theories on Rumpelstiltskin! My only hope for his character is that he helps defeat Regina and is reunited with Belle. If those two things happen, my life will be complete.

Welcome to the forums!
Desperate Souls and Skin Deep were two very pivotal episodes for Rumpel’s character. We finally got a glimpse behind the psychotic behavior and strange giggles and into the man underneath. Along with Heart of Darkness, Desperate Souls and Skin Deep are my favorite episodes. Very emotional and very informative.

At first, I felt like a freak for liking Rumpelsitlskin so much, but I see a lot of people are also big fans of his too, so I don’t feel so lonely anymore.
And to answer one of the questions from the OP, Rumpelstiltskin is technically evil. This has been demonstrated through various examples of murder, violence and manipulation. But at the same time, he is a necessary evil. In both worlds, the “good guys” continuously seek Rumpel/Gold’s assistance. Even Emma is asking for his help. So, the characters are hypocrites in a way. They critcize Rumpel/Gold’s actions and tactics, but when they find themselves in a sticky situation, they abandon their own moral standards, disregard their previous negative opinions of him, and seek his help. It’s very strange.
And to be honest, most of Rumpel’s “evilness” comes from him being the Dark One. Before he became the Dark One, Rumpel was a good man. A cowards? Sure. But a decent man nonetheless. So, I think the curse of the Dark One poisoned him.

I think Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin is the deepest and most complex character on the show. The show’s characterization of him went from a malicious psychotic mad man, to a deeply flawed, sympathetic and almost tragic romatic figure. His character-centric episodes (Desperate Souls and Skin Deep) have been my favorite episodes so far. They’re always dark and tragic, with a hint of romance and compassion. To me, Rumpelstiltskin is the epitome of the tragic romantic figure. A man who started out as a simple and decent man, but succumbed to powerful temptation which ultimately destroyed him.

Welcome to the forums Empty Heart! It’s nice to see another Rumpel-lover in the house!
And MAJOR PROPS for your post! I completely agree.

Midnight Dreary suggested that Rumpelstiltskin gave the Evil Queen the wrong ingredients for the curse. I think she may actually be right. Rumpel said that in order to enact the curse, you must sacrifice the heart of the person you love most. Well, if that’s the case, how Rumpel even know that? Everyone Rumpel ever loved was either dead or missing by the time he began working on the curse. His son was gone, his first wife was gone, Belle was gone. How would he know that the curse required the heart of the person you love most when he himself didn’t have the key ingredient? I think Rumpel gave the Evil Queen the wrong ingredients to accomplish two things:
1. He honestly didn’t want to give Regina the real curse and the only way to both satisfy her demands and save himself at the same time was to give her the wrong ingredients. So, Regina did in fact cast a curse, however, I believe it was a different curse or the “wrong” curse. If this is true, then no mater what Regina does in Storybrooke, Mr. Gold will always have the upper hand because he’s the only one knows that Regina cast the wrong curse.
2. I also believe that Rumpel gave the Evil Queen the wrong ingredients out of petty revenge. Even though Rumpel believed that it was Belle’s father that caused her eventaul suicide, I could easily see Rumpel placing blame on the Evil Queen as well. In his eyes, if it wasn’t for the Evil Queen’s intervention and manipulation of Belle, then the tragedy would have never happened. Belle would have returned home, she would have never kissed him, and Rumpel would have never accused her of working with the Evil Queen. I know, it sounds loaded and petty, but the death of a loved causes a person to blame everyone who was involved. And unfortunately for Regina, that includes her.
So, as punishment, Rumpel lies and tells the Evil Queen that the heart of the person you love most is needed for the curse, when in fact, the main ingredient was probably true love. So, Rumpel gets to keep his curse, defeat Regina and ruthlessly punish her by forcing her to sacrifice her own father all at the same time.
Man this guy is scary. 😯
