Even though he’s taken up the mantle of the Dark One again, he’s still trying to lay low- the dark colors are about as close to camouflage as we’re likely to see him wear. Why wear the outfit at all? Well, of course there will be the occasional encounter with a Lost Boy or two, but they don’t seem too impressed at it probably wouldn’t matter what Rumple was wearing. No, I think more likely the coat is for Rumpelstiltskin himself. It’s been a while since he was “The Dark One” and he spent some of that time trying to outright bury that part of his past, even if it wasn’t successful. Taking up the cowl (to borrow a Batman metaphor) is a physical and real way to reassure himself that he is still capable of being ruthless and has the ability to do what needs to be done, no matter what the cost.
This is why bamf, your analyses are my favorite to read. I totally agree with all of this. And I like would to add, on an island that Pan knows very well, he also needs to be stealthy. But love your explanation as always. You rock girl!

This man will be the death of me.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 26, 2013 at 5:24 am #218789PheeParticipantToday at lunch I was trying to explain that very scene to a couple of people who aren’t up on S3 yet, but think Rumple is fabulous. So I was telling them about Pan, and used this scene as an example of how wonderful Robbie Kay is that he can act along side Robert Carlyle when he’s all decked out in the Rumple gear, and make him look like a scared little boy. There was much flailing of my arms, and pretty sure my voice rose several decibels, because I was trying to convey how intense this whole thing is.
Just when we thought we’d seen all the sides of Rumple, now we’re getting yet another layer to him, and it’s wonderful and it hurts and I can’t wait to delve into his past more to find out where he truly comes from.

However, I think that he might have been freed of his curse when he sacrificed himself despite of the missing TLK. After watching that scene again, I remember something from the Disney B&tB movie.
When you watch from 0:35 to 1:00 you can see a certain similarity to this scenes:

So my theory is that Belle’s TLK in Skin Deep was just a first step to breaking the curse and that a change of his character was necessary, too (remember he let her go and the curse was breaking after the kiss but then he got mad…). So after sacrificing himself for Bae and Belle that change had happened.

A curse that powerful should not entirely be broken because someone else is generous and kind–feels like the struggle also is to make that choice yourself to break free, which Rumple did, to internalize the desire not to be filled only by as Rumple put it “craven self-interest”.
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?” -- Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

I think that’s a really good idea.
Rumple needed to make a choice, not have one made for him.
