Mr. Gold to August: “…This knife cannot harness any magic in this world because there is no magic in this world.”
Evidence that there is magic in this world:
The curse exists:
1) manipulates people’s memories
2) stops time
3) stops people from leaving StorybrookeRumplestiltskin’s “please” works on Regina
Regina was able to kill Graham by crushing his glowing heart
Jefferson’s hat possibly did something magic
So did Mr. Gold lie just to get the knife back from August? He seemed to believe it when he said it. The Blue Fairy said she was giving Bae a way to get to a world without magic. Did she intentionally lie? Was Regina able to bring her magic with her because she cast the curse, but nobody else? Is this why the “please” still works, because it is related to Regina?
I DON’T UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!
[adrotate group="5"]April 28, 2012 at 2:08 pm #144441obisgirlParticipantMagic came back to Storybrooke because Emma brought it back. But I think some magic existed before Emma came to town, mainly from the curse. I mean, really a pregnancy that lasts 28 years? 😆 😆

It’s a place founded on magic, within a world without magic. The entire situation seems contradictory doesn’t it? It has magic, even though it’s not supposed to.
April 28, 2012 at 3:49 pm #144468hjbauParticipantI don’t think the please is magical. I think that Regina could choose to not do what Rumpel says when he says please, she would be breaking the deal though and it would cause a consequence. That has just always been my thought on it. Also Gold would have to be very specific if he wanted Regina to do something big. Like if he found out about Belle and told Regina to give Belle to him she could kill her and give her to Rumpel. That may be why Rumpel has yet to use the please for anything really important.

That’s a pretty good description IMO.
Apart from the overall curse with the time stoppage and the trapping everyone in town stuff, Graham’s heart (wonder if Regina’s got any more stashed away in there) was the only thing to have retained any magic after the transition. Maybe it was the fact that Graham was still alive in SB that kept his heart “alive” as well.
The only other suggestion we’ve had of non-curse-specific magic existing is that Emma appears to have made a magical hat.

I’d always just figured it was something she was magically bound and compelled to do because of the curse. But it could very well be just the fact that she made that deal with him, so she’s keeping it, coz folks don’t get away with breaking deals they make with that guy.
April 28, 2012 at 7:56 pm #144508SnickerdoodleParticipantI am thinking that things that pertain to the curse are magical, meaning the curse itself contains the magic. I think the characters caught within the curse have been stripped of their magic. So the heart transported with the curse, just as Mr. Gold’s “please” was transported. Perhaps Regina customized the curse in that way before she enacted it. Certain things containing magic were brought to SB, but I still am not of the opinion that she or Rumpel have any active magic at this time, even though they have knowledge.
Don’t forget though that Mr. Gold said he had buried the knife because when Emma came to town he saw things changing. I took that to mean he wasn’t certain if certain magical items were going to “find” themselves with magic again. Thus hiding the knife from Regina. He said he didn’t want to take a chance. So obviously, he himself doesn’t even know how far reaching the affect of Emma’s appearance in SB is going to be. He must think it is possible she will bring the magic that is in stasis back to life, particularly in some of the objects that held magic.

Well, we did see that compass in True North spin like crazy as the twins father drove up.
April 28, 2012 at 11:14 pm #144525hjbauParticipantEmma held the compass though so maybe that is why it started working again. Maybe if she held the knife the same thing could happen. I wonder where Gold has it now. Maybe the knife will come into play before the season is out.

Jefferson’s hat possibly did something magicThere are other means of doing any of these things without fairy tale magic, for example, Technology, Science are simply other kinds of “magics”. Perhaps, Graham and the glowing heart are connected in a different way. Consider this scenario: The Queen has apples and boxes of hearts. Let’s say the nectar/poison of the apples still acts as a sleeping potion. Graham was given an apple, he goes to sleep. While asleep, Graham’s heart is somehow linked to the glowing heart which, btw, doesn’t have to be magic to glow. Remember those real-life Glo-Worm bedtime toys? Think like that. So, when Regina has a temper tantrum and crushes the heart, she broke her toy – rather humorous and subtle subtext, if you ask me.

They went Somewhere, Over the Rainbow but sort of in reverse.

“Please” is a control word – a trigger. She is bound to it in both worlds. Why it works in Storybrooke when Gold uses it is a HUGE clue as to why Regina suddenly stops her action and moves along. It’s as if The Universe wanted her to suddenly find some other idea to pursue the moment Gold says “Please.”

Then you won’t understand the following: Cacodylic acid, Starlite, Picabia
OUAT is far beyond a simple TV program. I’ve found things but I’m not going to set up up for anyone yet – FIGURE IT OUT…it’s fun, involves many accomplices and is coming at us from all directions. There is a brilliant concept already in play and most have no idea what is about to happen. It will make you question everything you “believe” is factual. Trust me, OUAT didn’t begin with the pilot. Get ready to be amazed and ask yourseelf, “Who are you?”.

Agreed.

Maybe I’m missing something in your explanation but it still sounds like magic to me. What is this “somehow” that Graham’s heart gets linked to the glowing heart after he has been sedated by a drugged apple? Unless you are saying that Regina put Glo-Worm innards into a real heart and when she crushed it (and it turned to dust, by the way), Graham just coincidentally died at that moment.
