If this thread has already been made apologies!
Ok, I am a diehard Captain Swan shipper and make no apologies for that fact. They are totally my OTP of OTPs. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want Neal to be happy, even if it’s my opinion that he and Emma don’t belong together. But let’s go ahead and explore some of the Neal/Mulan scenes in 3×01.
Now, first of all, 3 months or so back, A+E said they weren’t considering them an option right now. That was then though. But also keep in mind that this is all just my speculation though on their scenes together, so nobody get their expectations up. So let’s explore their dynamic.
This ship was set up in this episode, i’m sorry but it was IMO. In Tallahassee, Killian and Emma were bonding over their lost love. And in 3×01, Neal and Mulan are doing the exact same thing.
Let’s talk about this line: “Your belief in love wasn’t powerful enough to overcome your fear of rejection”.
Wow, that line packs a punch. Of course, when Mulan says that to Neal, she’s actually talking about herself as well i.e. Phillip. She’s identifying with him, just like Killian did with Emma in Tallahassee. I really liked their dynamic in general as well, Mulan is so noble that she needs someone like Neal to balance her out and vice versa.
Another thing I noticed is that Mulan was actually smiling at him! THIS IS MULAN. How often have we seen her smiling?? No other time as far as I can recall.
And then there was a parallel, which we know the creators of this show LOVE. Mulan was leaning over Neal when he woke up – 3×01. Just like Charming was leaning over Snow in 1×01, and Phillip was leaning over Aurora in 2×01. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
We know that Jamie Chung is a busy actress but I hope some of her backstory (and future story) is addressed. In this episode she became a lot more interesting to me.

Completely on board! It was a crackship before that I hadn’t paid much attention to because we haven’t seen them together before now but I actually really enjoyed their interaction tonight! I agree, it paralleled Tallahassee nicely.
I hadn’t even noticed the episode 1 of each season with the leaning over someone when they are woken up thing, but we have seen many sitting on hospital beds at various times as well (which this essentially was).
I too am a diehard CaptainSwan fan but refuse to just ship someone to get them out of the way. I love young Bae and after my rewatch, found that I enjoy Neal too, as a FRIEND to Emma (their shippy stuff still makes me want to scream but the episodes when they weren’t addressing that and were just interacting as friends and co-parents I actually enjoyed him much more). I definitely want him to be happy!
I really really liked the Neal and Mulan scenes tonight and expect them to at least be very good friends but I definitely see potential for it to be more than that.
They paralleled it so nicely with Hook and Emma in Tallahassee, right down to him acknowledging that he’s heard of her (which was fun). Loved the happy looks on their faces in the midst of all the bad stuff that has happened! I agree, we haven’t seen Mulan very happy and she’s definitely the 3rd wheel in that triangle which was obvious from the start (TLK kinda trumps everything else). She is to Phillip & Aurora what Neal is to Emma & Hook (in my opinion, don’t burn me!) and I see them being very good kindred spirits that could lead to more once they deal with their individual issues and pasts (basically the same thing that everybody else needs to do which is why it’s a slow process!).
The fact that they split off from the group and the 2 of them went on and adventure and then had to get past the person guarding the “treasure” of Rumple’s castle while they go in specifically to get a magical object and spend the whole day asking the tough questions and getting to know one another when Neal has barely opened up to anybody else about his real feelings and them talking about love within a short amount of time as meeting ALL parallel CaptainSwan and I loved it! *takes a breath* – got a little over-excited with the parallels.
The ONLY issue I have with shipping this (and frankly, I still want to crackship it at this point because I was that moved by it and actually super excited for him in a relationship since my wishlist for Morraine and then Wendy Darling didn’t pan out, at least not yet), is that there’s the issue of Shang.
It’s the reason I can’t get behind Hookriel anymore, even as a backup if *sniff* necessary for Hook. It’s a nice idea on paper and I hope we’ll see something like that play out elsewhere, either here or somewhere completely different. I do love the IDEA of it but Eric has been cast which means that he and Hook are NOT the same guy. I really really want them to keep Disney canon TL couples as that: canon. I don’t mind them double-dipping on characters though.
There was a gif going around earlier showing Shang flipping a walking stick around much like Neal was with the walking stick tonight and it made me happy, even if it is more of a crackship thing than a Shang-lite one.
However, it doesn’t entirely rule it out until we actually SEE that OUAT has its own Shang. Otherwise he may be the Shang-type character (and I could see that actually). When they were asked about it at Comic Con they deflected and reminded everyone that we had just seen Neal say ILY to Emma so he’ll be dealing with all of that and trying to get back to her. I don’t recall them ever saying anything else about it, much less shooting it down but I may have missed that bit. Even if they did say they weren’t thinking about it at the time, it still set up similarly enough that they left the door open to using it in the future if they want to. Or they could just be trying to keep something secret for once and right now, Neal IS trying to get back to Emma and Mulan knows this but it doesn’t rule it out in the future.
Archie isn’t Roger but he still owns Pongo, so Archie is essentially Roger-lite. So if they decided to pair Mulan and Neal and make Neal essentially Shang-lite, I’d be perfectly fine with that. If Shang pops up though, I’ll have to jump crackship again (which would make me sad cause I really really like these two! I think I’ve spent almost as much time thinking about these two as I have about CaptainSwan today because there were so many parallels in there and I loved them all!)
Glad I’m not alone, even though I’m sure this crackship won’t be overly popular around here! 😛
I genuinely want EVERYONE to be happy and I want to actually ENJOY all of the love stories and so far that has been true and they all make sense. I hope it continues with however they all play out! (But I would be super happy if MuFire/WarriorFire whatever the heck it is called happens, as I already love it even though my OTP of OTPs is of course, CaptainSwan.)

TOTALLY AGREE. That’s exactly what I was thinking! Once they get past all their crap with unrequited love etc. they would totally be perfect for each other 🙂

I guess we’ll have to wait until 3×03 to see if they’re still getting on so well lol. I actually really enjoyed these scenes with Neal, he really looked like he knew what he was doing and he was actually quite funny in the episode hehe. I’m totally on board the Dragonfire ship (until I see how/if he interacts with Wendy!)

I hope they will talk about his future stepmother a little, cause he only knows about the telephone and Lacy. Maybe he find something of Belle what they can use. Would be funny, if he needs the pillow to get to Emma. Rumple enchanted the thinks that are important to him and if his first present to Belle is in ET, then it has maybe something that can be used for Rumple safety plan.

I know a lot of people are shipping Mulan and Neal because they want to preserve Emma for Captain Hook. However, if you were to be objective about it, would you still see it this way? The subject of Mulan and Neal being a romantic couple was raised at Comic-Con 2013 San Diego, and Eddy Kitsis basically said it was not going to happen. Here is what was said in reply (starting at the 10: 22 mark):
Question: There are shippers out there already matching [Neal] with Mulan. Is that a possibility?
Jennifer Morrison: Watch it! That’s my baby’s daddy you’re talking about!
Edward Kitsis: Well, you know, is it a couple we’re considering? I think the last thing I saw Neal do was look up at the woman he’s loved for 10 years and say, ‘I love you, too.’ And right now, I mean, I can’t imagine he doesn’t want to get back to her and his son. Unfortunately for him, she’s with Captain Hook, and thinks he’s dead.
Michael Raymond-James: That’s true, but you now, Neal is going to attempt to move heaven and hell, and if there’s a captain in the way, so be it.
I’m pretty sure that if the show’s creators and MRJ say that Neal only has eyes for Emma, that they mean it. That means there is next to no chance of Mulan ever being more than just a friend to Neal.

Thirdly, I placed a caveat in my original posting basically saying that it was too early to tell if there was much between them.
And finally, I’m wondering why it’s so hard to believe that someone would ship a couple because they’d bonded and connected over their heartbreak? That you see some chemistry, weren’t the only one and would like to see where it goes?

By all means, please continue to ship if you want. It’s up to you. I was just raising what I think is an important point that the show creators have all but ruled out any romantic pairing between Mulan and Neal. A lot of fans still ship SwanQueen, despite the fact that Eddy and Adam said in the same clip I provided above that they hadn’t intended to write a romantic subtext into Regina and Emma’s relationship; they only intended to show two women who both love Henry. Fans often read into the show what they want to, and infer what they want to, rather than what the writers actually intend to show.

While it’s true that Adam and Eddy rarely say “never” on this show, having watched 3×1, it’s clear in my mind that they meant what they said in that interview. Neal obviously loves Emma and wants to get back to her. Mulan encouraged Neal to think of Emma and his feelings for her to make the magic orb work. MRJ said Neal would move heaven and hell just to get back to Emma in S3 and we know he will by about 3×7 according to spoilers. So any chance of Mulan and Neal ever getting off the ground seems slim, at best, to me. But, hey, I’m not averse to crackships. I like Regina and Hook as a would-be couple, even though right now, that seems unlikely, at best, from ever getting off the ground. Doesn’t mean we can’t ship different couples.

It’s hard for me to believe that Mulan and Neal could be a couple because the show creators all but ruled it out. Again, never saying never, but I am saying highly improbable in my book. Just because two people share something in common doesn’t mean they’ll be romantically linked in the show. Again, take Hook and Regina as an example. Both have lost love and sought revenge, and both are used to being misunderstood and labeled as villains. Yet, I acknowledge that HookedQueen probably won’t happen. It’s just one of those things, that I’d be glad if they did, but I won’t be disappointed if they didn’t.
