As an Irish person hearing Sarah Bolger’s accent is really refreshing.
Being exposed to more heteronormativity is not. 🙁 Poor Mulan.
I don't cause commotions, I am one.

Poor Mulan.
I completely agree with your issue with heteronormativity. That is why even though I was happy with that plot development (“Quite a Common Fairy” is, in fact, my favorite season 3 episode so far, for various reasons), I don’t like how it is doomed to go nowhere. If Mulan were a male, Aurora would either feel the same way and would leave Phillip for him or there would be a love triangle (or, at the very least, Aurora would know how Mulan feels), but because Mulan is a female, we get the classic tragically doomed case of love that will either not last or is unrequited. It is an age-old method of storytelling; heterosexual people get their happy endings, while people of other forms of sexuality are either ignored as if they don’t exist or are doomed to ultimate loneliness. It is also why (even though I don’t want to rehash this from months ago) this podcast caused such a controversy amongst its listeners because of its treatment toward this episode and also lost me as a listener; in what was supposed to be a FULL discussion of the episode, Daniel, Jenny, and Jeremy completely ignored this particular plot development and did not even mention it because they knew how stupid it would sound to say that it doesn’t belong in a “family friendly” series that features violence, murder, the use of dark magic, sex that is used as a manipulative tool, and so forth. I could not overlook that and haven’t listened to them since, although I do, on occasion, visit the forum to keep in touch with fellow fans of the series. I now listen to a podcast called THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR which is hosted by two wonderfully fun and open-minded women who, amongst other traits, are completely shipper-friendly.
