ParticipantHas anyone else noticed Neal’s looks towards Emma the few times he has seen her do magic?
Given his history, he hates magic…and I wonder how it is affecting him watching the woman he loves not only use magic, but be actively learning how to further use magic.
Could be a deal breaker for him…leaving room for Captain Swan fans (which breaks my heart because I’m Team SwanFire).

KeymasterWe were discussing this over in the SwanFire thread but actually, you’ll notice Neal backs Emma up. Literally. When he sees that Emma is going to do magic with Regina, he moves behind her so that he literally has her back and then watches her, to make sure she’s ok. Also Neal may not like magic, but he understands that it must be done to get Henry back. He was ok with putting the Lost Boys asleep, for example. I think Neal worries because he knows what magic does to people: a la Rumple and when he became the Dark One. He hasn’t once said, “I don’t think you should do this because magic is evil.” Neal is opening up to the idea of magic, using it to rescue his family.

ParticipantNeal’s known that Emma has magic since the Cora showdown in the shop. Back then, his, “I didn’t know you were magical,” was said in a pretty casual and curious way, so I don’t think that her having magic in and of itself is something that he’s especially concerned about. I think what he’s concerned about is the fact that she’s getting magical instruction from Regina, because Regina trades in dark magic, and Neal has seen his father fall into the clutches of dark magic, and he doesn’t want to see the same thing happen to someone else he loves.
We dunno how/if her magical education will continue they’re out of NL. Would Regina keep instructing her? Would Rumple take over? Blue? Tink if she gets her magic back? Or will she just experiment on her own?

Not only is Neal open to Emma using magic to help save their son, but Neal himself used magic in 3×1 to help get back to Emma and Henry. He used the magic orb to discover that Emma was in NL. He even said how ironic it is that he’s spent his entire life avoiding magic only now to use it. Desperate times call for desperate measures. This doesn’t mean that Neal is on a path to becoming the next Dark One, as some CS fans had previously speculated, any more than Emma learning magic from Regina means Emma is bound to become the next evil queen. Nope. It just means that Emma and Neal are willing to do things they might not otherwise condone, like hitching a ride to NL on the Shadow or Emma permitting Regina to take a Lost Boy’s heart, in order to get back their son. Yet, Neal wasn’t willing to let his father harm the Lost Boys just as Emma wasn’t willing to kill a Lost Boy. Both Emma and Neal have been on a very similar path in S3 when it comes to magic and when it comes to their son.
Now, as far as magic goes, Neal doesn’t actually oppose all magic, just dark magic. As a boy, Bae was willing to use a magic bean which the Blue Fairy gave him, and traditionally, fairy magic is light magic. Emma, who embodies true love magic, has so far only used magic for benevolent purposes, which Neal doesn’t object to. Where Neal is right to be concerned is when people start to give into dark magic, like his father did. Now, Regina teaching magic to Emma could be cause for concern in the future, and Emma herself said in 3×6 there must be a way to do magic without going dark. So, Neal knowing to be cautious of dark magic could actually be a good thing for Emma, since Neal knows the warning signs of how a desire for power can corrupt. Neal could actually prove to be a good influence/reminder to Emma if she ever starts to be tempted by dark magic.
