I didn’t say he didn’t know anything about Oz. Clearly he does–but I’m suggesting it’s culturally not life experience. He knows ruby slippers exist as portal makers but that’s from the movie, not actually being in Oz and knowing Dorothy because we *know* they can’t use the ruby slippers. He knows that the Crystal Ball might help him because the WWW used it in the movie to see Dorothy and then show Dorothy Auntie Em but has no idea how to use it, try though he might.
Agreed. They even made a point of giving Neal lines about having watched movies (Mulan), then had him mention ruby slippers, but we know the actual slippers in the show aren’t gonna be ruby, he just got that idea from having watched the movie IMO, not first hand Oz experience. Even if he hadn’t seen the WW using the crystal ball in the movie, general crystal ball basics are a general thing that everyone knows – you look into them and they let you see stuff.

Agreed. It’s standard object in movies, books, fairy tales, ect. He knew it was a crystal ball. What else do you do with a crystal ball?

My point is that he knew instinctively that his father had the crystal ball from OZ. How did he know this. He flew to his castle to find it. So, if he wasn’t surprised to find the crystal ball from Oz, why would he be surprised to see flying monkeys, especially if he had seen them in the movie.

But he didn’t know that his father had the ball. He knew that his father had backup plans and most likely there was something in that castle that would help him. It was when he opened the door and saw the ball that the light went off–“oh a crystal ball! I can use that to see people”
As for the monkeys, I actually think this adds to the point that he hasn’t been to Oz. He was surprised to see them–thinking them only fictional. Ruby slippers and crystal balls are one thing but Neal has experience with portals (extensive knowledge in fact lol) and knows that crystal balls exist in general but flying monkeys are something that are almost too fantastical. Even Snow White doesn’t know about them.

I can understand why you see it that way RG and you could absolutely be right about it. I just don’t. I think Neal has travelled and seen many other worlds. My gut just tells me differently. 🙂

At some point in the past year in Enchanted Forest, he got ‘send’ there likely by the Witch. Now he is trying to get home (so he is Dorothy) isnt he going to have an adventure with Belle soon in an upcoming ep? she can be Toto 🙂

So basically we can view that he knew what a flying monkey is from the movie yet never seen one in actuality.
But one can say that if he visit Oz in the past, perhaps there wasn’t any flying monkeys back then? Maybe Flying Monkey came later.
So who knows. Really Cool theory though.
