    – Eragon. Robert Carlyle plays an evil sorcerer…thing in this one.

True, it’s a good enough move on its own, but the book is SOO much better. (He’s probably not old enough to read it yet though.) They changed certain things from the book that I thought were critical to the meaning, so that ruined it for me.

But if you’re not analyzing it, it’s fun enough. And yes, RC is one of the two best things about the movie … the other being Jeremy Irons. 😎

    – Zathura!!

    — You recommend Zathura, but not Jumanji?!? I saw Jumanji in the theater when i was 13! 😀

    Jumanji

    — And on that note, how about Mrs. Doubtfire? 🙂

    Mrs. Doubtfire

    — Has he seen Lilo and Stitch? “Also cute and fluffy!!!” 😀

And the sentence you never want to hear a kid say on the phone: “Hello? Aliens are attacking my house … OH GOOD, my dog found the chainsaw!” 😆

    Lilo and Stitch

    — How about Stuart Little?

    Stuart Little

Lets see, thinking back to my childhood in the 80s, what were some of my favorites…

    — Hmm, I wonder how old is old enough to see the Neverending Story? That is an amazing one! 😎

    Neverending story

    — And another favorite of mine was Short Circuit (but I called it “5 alive” 😉 ). Lots of the humor went over my head, but I didn’t know that. I loved it anyway! 😆
Though in retrospect, Fisher Stevens being tinted brownish and speaking with an Indian accent was … unfortunate. But I didn’t know any of that as a kid. 😉

And since I was born to like sci-fi, robot movie FTW! 😆

    — Um, what about Harry Potter??? The later ones might be too much for him, but he could start with the early ones, and grow along with the series! 😀

    — Fern gully. A sweet cartoon from a while ago, with an environmental message. James Cameron stole most of the plot from this when he made Avatar! 😛

    — Big hero 6. Like Marvel’s Avengers, but for kids. 🙂

    — Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

    — How about Pirates of the Caribbean? Even more sword fights in your living room! 😆

    — Rango

    — ratatouille

    — The little vampire. Cute!

Ahhh I love The Little Vampire! He’ll definitely like that!

    – Spiderman (2002 version) He’s probably seen the most recent version of spiderman from like 2013, but he may not have seen this one. I like both but this is still great (William Dafoe as Green Goblin is amazing!) If you get it for him, don’t confuse it with the most recent live version which is called The Amazing Spiderman.

    – Astro Boy (2009)

    – Jack Frost (1998) Great movie about a dad who comes back to life as a snowman for his son. This one shares a title with a horror movie…. In the name of god, don’t let him see the horror film!!! xD

    – A Goofy Movie This might have been suggested already but *shrug*

    – Spy Kids series!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can’t go wrong with this one! This is great!

Looking into MILO AND OTIS  >>> SPY KIDS >>>HERO 6 >>> putting off SPIDERMAN and Super Heros after the last time he almost broke my DH’s family TIFFANY LAMP ( now safely moved to the master bedroom)  Loves the action movies but gets rambunctious …. have Harry Potter 1 thru 7 BUT only let him watch 1-4 >>>

THINK part of my problem is I have a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes ( have players)  so I tend to run out of ideas… thank you for all the great film ideas…. THIS THREAD has been very helpful.

    The Santa Clause

The Adventures of Shark-Boy and Lava-Girl

Mr Bean’s Holiday (NOT Bean, which is the first film; this sequel is more child-friendly)

Spirited Away (possibly; there are some scary moments in it, but no more than a Disney film; honestly I would recommend any Miyazaki movie, aside from The Castle of Cagliostro,Princess Mononoke, and The Wind Rises — some other Ghibli movies are more intense, but Miyazaki’s tend to be more child-friendly; Nausicaä and Castle in the Sky could also be a bit frightening)

Teacher’s Pet (which was also a TV show)

    – Last Airbender (especially if he’s a fan of the cartoon or the Korra spinoff which he’s probably seen)

Honestly, this was not a very good adaptation of the series; many fans were disappointed in it. If he hasn’t seen the original series, I would definitely recommend that, no matter what. It’s a masterpiece. They just released a complete series box set, which is pretty cheap on Amazon.

We do have HOCUS POCOUS … he calls that a girls movie but he watches it every time we pull it out to play

There are no “girls’ movies” or “boys’ movies,” just “movies.” 😉

And, of course, if there’s ever a movie you are iffy on, you can find content warnings on their IMDb pages.

A pretty old classic, but I remember I loved it when I was a kid.

What about the Golden Compass? I don’t know about the movie adaptation, but the books were quite good.

Oh yah, I know a lot of hardcore fans of the show hated it as an adaptation. But I don’t think kids would really complain. I watched the original series and I was okay with it, and my sister loves it. At the very least, the special effects were amazing! And the costumes were well done. The script (and cast) just needed major adjustments. I have said that if the cartoon had never existed and the film was original, I think it’d be seen better.

Ooh, Willow is a tricky one. I love it to bits, but there are some graphic images that could be scary for kids, so you might want to wait a few years. Or at least have him look away for the troll-bridge-transformation scene. (I did as a kid.) But the special effects are pretty impressive for an 80s movie! 🙂

And I’ll second Jiminy’s advice of looking up content warnings on IMDB. Just go to the IMDB page for any movie, and click on “parents guide”. There it will detail all potential issues in the movie, so you can judge what your kid can handle. 🙂

Here is the page for Willow: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446/parentalguide?ref_=tt_ql_7

I recommended The Iron Giant to a friend for his son. I think the movie has a lot going for it, but what the son got out of it was “scary robot”.
