I recommended The Iron Giant to a friend for his son. I think the movie has a lot going for it, but what the son got out of it was “scary robot”.
Whaaaaaattt??? He was a friendly robot!!! 😮
Sorry he couldn’t understand that. 🙁

I think it might have been the giant’s big eyes. At least, I remember being scared of Sleestaks on the original Land of the Lost — I still get a start when I see a picture of one. Spider eyes, too. And grey aliens. And skulls. It probably all boils down to things that resemble skulls.

If he hasn’t seen the original series, I would definitely recommend that, no matter what. It’s a masterpiece. They just released a complete series box set, which is pretty cheap on Amazon.
Oh yah, I know a lot of hardcore fans of the show hated it as an adaptation. But I don’t think kids would really complain. I watched the original series and I was okay with it, and my sister loves it. At the very least, the special effects were amazing! And the costumes were well done. The script (and cast) just needed major adjustments. I have said that if the cartoon had never existed and the film was original, I think it’d be seen better.
Watcher, that’s similar to what I said about Eragon. By grown-up analysis, and comparison to the source, the movie ruined certain things for me. But it would be a perfectly fun ride for a kid! In fact, I saw Eragon in the theater, and a friend was there with her son. I forget how old he was, but probably under ten. He LOVED LOVED LOVED the movie! 😀 I think he’s dyslexic and has a lot of trouble reading, but Eragon made him WANT to read the book! 😎 (It also made him want a dragon, but then, so do I. 😉 )
Spirited Away (possibly; there are some scary moments in it, but no more than a Disney film; honestly I would recommend any Miyazaki movie, aside from The Castle of Cagliostro,Princess Mononoke, and The Wind Rises — some other Ghibli movies are more intense, but Miyazaki’s tend to be more child-friendly; Nausicaä and Castle in the Sky could also be a bit frightening)
Ok, I am OBSESSED with Miyazaki movies, and I love finding fellow fans or making new ones! 😀 (Jiminy, I’d love to discuss some in depth if you would, but this thread is not the place. 🙂 )
Anyway, yes to Spirited Away! And Ponyo is nice and kid friendly. 🙂 Oh, and The Secret World of Arrietty, based on The Borrowers. 😎
But one of my absolute favorites is My Neighbor Totoro! It has some of the most wonderfully whimsical and imaginative things I have ever seen!!! And it is not merely a kids movie, it can bring out the inner child in any age viewer! I like to say it is a movie about childhood itself, capable of reminding any viewer of how a child sees the world, completely filled with wonder and awe, plus fear of some of life’s realities.
Two content warnings though. One is a cultural thing (it’s a Japanese animated movie). There is one scene that could be odd by western standards, where a father and his two young daughters take a bath together. Nothing graphic about it, but you know they are all naked. It is played as completely casual and normal, just nice family time together, in the bath. The biggest takeaway of the scene is everyone laughing together to drive away fears of a strong storm in a new house. Like I said, it is a cultural thing, and treated as normal. Use your own judgement there. 🙂
The other thing I would warn you about, is the girls’ mother is away in the hospital for the duration of the movie. She comes home at the end, but the children spend much of the movie worrying if she will get better, and several times fear the worst. This could be troubling for a kid. There is one bad scare which causes the littler girl to go off on her own and get lost. Then there is a frenzied search for the girl, and at one point everyone panics when they pull a child’s sandal from a pond. (It’s not hers.) It is at this point that the fantasy elements come to the rescue big time!
Anyway, it is an absolutely wonderful movie, with a child’s view of all the things that adults forget how to see. It is playful and whimsical, as children try to understand the big scary real world. You’ll just have to use your judgement on whether the issues I listed hit too close to home or not. 🙂
