KeymasterA and E also promised they wouldn’t recast the Mad Hatter, they want Sebastian. So unless they were trying to side step the issue of never seeing Sebby again, I think there will be some livid fans if they’ve recast but called it magic and promised to still have Sebastian in other places.

ParticipantHow does Wonderland fit into the world of Once Upon a Time? — Betty
NATALIE: Let us take a look back to what executive producer Edward Kitsis told reporters before the show was picked up to series: “Wonderland takes place post-curse, so the pilot actually starts when magic comes and the Wraith happens.” Note the Wraith, because that’s very important to where the spin-off actually picks up, with fans seeing a different character’s point of view that won’t make you angry. Also look for the spin-off to feature other lands in a mash-up style similar to Once that may make you question who a past character really was.I bolded the above sentence because I think it makes a HUGE difference here. I agree that angry should point to the Mad Hatter but how long ago was this blurb actually written? All they say here is that it’s what he told reporters before the show was picked up but was this the initial pitch? Part of the presentation when they actually had something to show? WHEN?!?
We know they don’t want to recast SS and I’m pretty sure there’s no way they get him for the pilot. I think since they made a point of saying “angry” and all the fuss originally was that they wanted it to be a show about the Mad Hatter, that this blurb was written ages ago and they’re just trying to tell us all the information they know, and going back to the beginning to point things out.
I get why it’s alluring and I was excited for a moment too, but until / unless we know when that particular comment was made, it could have been at any point in the past and I feel like this is initial pitch stuff, not recent.
Also the only part of that that Kitsis actually said was
“Wonderland takes place post-curse, so the pilot actually starts when magic comes and the Wraith happens.”
Everything else is conjecture based on whatever conversation they had with him, not words straight from his mouth. I have a feeling that’s why it was teased as “angry” since he wasn’t out and out letting them say who, but the last couple of days I’ve been focused on source material for things and this is all we officially have to go on. We see the same little quotes with a million different interpretations all the time, and people wonder why we thought it was official something was happening. Also things change once series get picked up, especially when you have to revamp because you can’t use the character you thought you were going to.
I could be wrong and if I am then I will happily join in trying to figure out who else it could mean, but for now I think the rabbit is just the rabbit (and a darn cute one at that!)

We don’t really know how much Kitsis or even Horowitz actually said to journalists. This excerpt from EW’s article about Once and Once:Wonderland crossing over, for example
Get this: The first episode of Wonderland currently starts in Storybrooke. We’re sworn to secrecy on details beyond that.
seemingly implies that they usually know far more than they say to us in articles and such.
I’m inclined to believe that TV Guide wouldn’t publish spoilers based on conjectures. Wetpaint, on the other hand…

KeymasterWetpaint will publish anything. lol.
It’s only May 29th. We got at least another month before we start getting anything solid.

ParticipantYeah wetpaint is kind of a supermarket tabloid of online entertainment news.
My thought was angry=grumpy. Lee was more likely available for low budget shooting of a speculative spin off.

ParticipantSo far I’ve had no luck finding the quote in anything that hasn’t appeared in the last couple of days. Anybody have any better luck?
KFChimera – it could be Grumpy but I’d hate to lose him on OUAT and I’d like to think he’ll be important in helping Belle out in SB.
Until we see when that quote was actually from I’m still inclined to think it was initial pitch-time rather than immediately before the show was picked up. Everything we heard about the show originally was that it was with the Mad Hatter in mind and then that had to be massively revamped.

ROFL!
If anybody has appeared cheshire cat-like to me, it’s Rumple (in his swordfight with Charming, grinning like an idiot, disappearing / reappearing in various places in the forest nearby). Can’t really imagine who they might actually use as a cheshire cat but as funny as GrumpyCat 2.0 would be….NO! lol

Keep in mind that the pilot episode isn’t complete yet, only 19 minutes out of about 42 have actually been shot. I agree that it seems ridiculous to book a busy guy like Seb for shooting the pilot of a speculative spin-off, but now that it has been picked up they can try to get him for the remaining scenes to be shot.

ParticipantThat is true–I would love to see Seb. I think Grumpy being a recurring character would mean he would not be lost to OUAT for a 1 time appearance in the pilot or something.
The other “mad” character is the March Hare.
