A major recurring guest star role with an option for next season is being cast, a character named Barrett. He’s in his 30s, kind and smart, but also has a very dark side and has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.
Obligatory, he’s Bae post. Just kidding. It doesn’t really sound too much like Bae in that he has dark beliefs, maybe a dark side I could buy, but not dark beliefs. Some people were speculating that it could be Robin Hood. That sort of makes sense because I could see Robin and Emma being attracted to each other, but I would hope they save Robin Hood until next season because we already have Hook and possibly Merlin already.
ETA: While I would like them to spread the men around to others besides Emma, from the spoilers about Emma’s love life, I could see Hook, Quinn, and now this Barrett all pursuing Emma. I think it’s really interesting though that they all have this dark side to them, so while she maybe attracted to all of them or by none of them, I think that’s a good contrast to Mysterious Man who seems very different from those three guys at least it seems that way right now from the casting calls. Plus, Mysterious Man seems like a guy that’s given up on love, at least for the time being, so I can’t really see him doing any pursuing, which makes him different from the other guys, again at least in theory.
While I do think Emma needs to be pursued and that they don’t just have Bae/Emma happen right away, I’m not happy that they sort of have every new guy that isn’t already matched up fall for her. (Well at least it feels that way right now, again I could be totally wrong.) I just hate that kind of writing on a series where the main lead always gets all the romantic attention. So I guess I’m just trying to rationalize everything now. As long as these guys aren’t anything serious or very different from the character that I think is Bae, then I’ll be in favor for this storyline. If these guys have a very dark side though and Emma can’t see it though and gets played really easily again like she did by Sydney and Regina, then I have a big problem with it. I guess I just have to wait and see.

A lot of people have speculated that Bae’s character might have become corrupted over time, as a result of being abandoned by Rumpel. Baelfire may not be Henry’s dad, after all. I don’t think Barrett would be Henry’s dad, since we’re supposed to meet him in 2×6.
Could he be the writer of Henry’s book? We have no idea right now who wrote it or how it came into Snow’s possession. The author could be flawed, like have a drinking problem that he tries to justify.
Maybe Barrett’s another FTL character. Robin Hood might be a good guess, except that Robin only stole from from the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham to feed the poor, which isn’t really a “dark side,” IMO. However, they could twist Robin’s character to make him have darker beliefs, like killing when necessary is justified.
Another possible candidate could be Aladdin, who was both a thief and a liar, in addition to being a really nice guy. Yet, again, I’m not sure that classifies him as having a dark side either. He was simply trying to survive and better his station when he pretended to be a prince.
One more idea I had it that Barrett might be grown-up Peter Pan. He was both fun and kind, yet he had a bit of a “dark side” in not wanting to grow up or let the Lost Boys do so. He constantly defended his care-free lifestyle as preferable to growing up. He seemed to think that keeping Wendy and her brothers in a perpetual childhood was no problem until Wendy convinced him otherwise.
With regards to Emma and her potential suitors, I’m thinking that she’ll be very closed off to romance, so that whoever tires to pursue her will have to be just as determined to reach her as she is to reject him. She’s a tough cookie, and now that she has Snow and Charming to look out for her, I doubt she’ll fall victim to the “love-is-blind” notion that Belle seems to have become entrapped in.

Honestly (and I’m going to have to go back and re-read Quinn’s bio) this sounds more like the Merlin I know. Highly intelligent. Does get credited for helping the ‘good’ guys through a lot of bad situations and can definitely be viewed as kind. But he is also capable of doing a lot of dark things as long as he felt they helped the greater good – for the kingdom. I’d kind of like to see Merlin coming off as an antagonist in ONCE- for awhile at least. 😀

Woah! That’s interesting…I totally forgot that we still don’t know who wrote that book! Barrett being Merlin would make sense…”has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.” If I remember correctly from Quinn’s bio he was disowned when people found out he had magic…so we know people probably don’t take kindly to warlocks and the sort and Merlin defending his way of life (which might be magic) would make sense.

They’re just not going to give up until we know for sure that Mysterious Man is both Baelfire and Henry’s dad. In fact, if someone wanted to wager what color hair Barrett will have, I would probably take them up on the bet because until we know for sure about Mysterious Man Bae/Henry’s dad, I’m guessing they’ll keep casting guys with brown hair.
Also, I’m expecting the synopsis and promos for episode 6 and episode 9 to try to try to keep misdirecting fans. So I think episode 6, they’ll make it seem like someone else is the baby daddy like Captain Hook. Then, before episode 9 which I think will be Mysterious Man’s episode, they’ll try to throw people off that he’s someone other than Bae.

This makes the most sense to me since Quinn is suppose to be fairly young and in need of a group to protect him.
October 23, 2012 at 3:03 am #157749naomiParticipantNot sure if I believe myself, but here goes. 🙂 I think that Barrett could be Bae, and that it’s not so farfetched. Yes, this is yet another the-new-character-must-be-Bae post. But here’s why.
While I do love the all the Bae theories so far (especially the Peter Pan ones!), I think that a crucial aspect of Bae’s character is that he hates magic. In The Return, we saw that he wouldn’t let his father heal the scrape on his knee. Later on in the episode, Rumple asks him what kind of world the bean will take them to, and Bae answers, “A better one.”
Most importantly, it was when August tried to use magic that Rumplestiltskin – immediately and without a doubt – realized that August was not his son.
So I don’t think this character quirk is something the writers would easily renege on. Plus we now know that magic brought a lot of pain into Baelfire’s life: it was used to force children to war, ruined his father, was used to kill his mother (even if he doesn’t know this)…and I’m thinking that whenever Bae comes into the picture, he will be furious at Rumpel for bringing magic to our world. He might even be ready to fight to “remove” magic from our world and defend his magic-free lifestyle. If defending a way of life is in the casting announcement describing Barrett (plus the fact that Barrett is a major recurring character), I think he could be Bae.
Also, I think it would make Bae an interesting foil to his father. Rumple is crippled by cowardice, and thus inseparable from magic; he has even given magic to others (like Regina and Cora) despite knowing the risks. Bae is brave, and if he despises magic wholly and completely, it will be interesting to see how father and son reconcile, and if true love can exist between them even though they are at such different extremes in so many ways.
October 23, 2012 at 3:23 am #157752sola1839ParticipantI don’t think that Baelfire hates magic. He did turn to the Blue Fairy for help. He also used a magic bean to get away. It’s not that he hates magic, but his father’s magic is different. Rumpel is addicted to his power and it has changed him. That’s what Bae hates, not magic itself. He probably also hates the fact that his father wanted power more than him.
The reason Rumpel knew August wasn’t Bae was because Baelfire came to this world specifically because it had no magic. Therefore, Bae would know that you can’t use magic here. That’s why Rumpel knew August was a liar. Bae wouldn’t have tried something he knew wouldn’t work like that.
October 23, 2012 at 3:29 am #157753naomiParticipantOf course that could be true, too.
Like everyone else, I’m just eager to see how Baelfire is going to react to everything. The writers can take it in so many different directions.
Anyway, regardless, I’m excited about Barrett: if it’s a major recurring character, he’s probably going to be pretty significant in terms of the whole story. I can’t wait to see who they cast.
