After watching episode 2, The Price, I had some ideas about Emma’s plan.
I think there is a new Savior in Storybrooke, and Emma knows it. She knows who it is, and she plans to stop the new Savior from realizing that they are a Savior, which is why she took everyone’s memories.
For the sake of this theory, let’s just assume the new Savior is Regina – the most likely candidate. (Keep in mind, when they make something obvious on this show, they could be preparing us for a big twist). But for now, we’ll go with Regina.
In this episode, Regina is battling with the belief that she could possibly be a savior. She’s doubting herself. Emma’s actions suggest that she wants Regina to doubt that the former Evil Queen could ever be the savior. This actually parallels perfectly with Emma’s savior journey. The first step is believing in yourself, which took Emma several seasons longer than Regina.
It’s possible that in the lost 6 weeks in Camelot, Regina (maybe someone else) proved herself to be a Savior by freeing Merlin from the Tree. Of course this would threaten Emma, who can’t control her dark thoughts. If Regina is now the Savior, where does that leave Emma?
Regina becoming a savior is possibly what pushed Emma towards the Dark side. Emma’s darkness is a crisis of identity. If she’s not the savior, who is she? In her identity crisis, Emma begins to embrace being the Dark One. She doesn’t want Regina to be the savior. It doesn’t help that Regina is the one with the dagger controlling Emma either.
Emma still wants to be the savior, but after seeing a new savior, she now has the warped ego of the former Evil Queen, who insisted the good guys (Snowing) were the real bad guys. Regina as EQ never saw herself as evil. Emma is now blinded to her own darkness in the same way. The parallels between Emma and Regina’s individual journey’s really supports this theory.
It’s possible Emma is still trying to be the savior, or maybe trying to take back her title. Since we don’t know Dark Swan’s master evil plan, we can only speculate.
But let’s face it. Emma was the center of the show in the beginning, but Regina is equally in the center of the show at this point. Once has become Regina’s redemption story. Personally, I love that. I love all the POVs in this show, and Regina is someone I have loved to hate/hated to love. It makes sense that her journey to true redemption would require her to be a Savior.
I’d love to hear other theories.
