There was an interesting theory that Miss Gulch wasn’t the witch of the west, but actually the witch of the east. Dorothy sees miss gulch become a flying witch, and if u look closely, allegedly you can see the witch wearing the ruby shoes (though its in black and white, there is a glisten to the shoes) Also, a deleted scene was to reveal that Gulch died during the tornado which some believe to indicate that as her being the wicked east witch. *shrug* just putting it out there, it goes along with the emerald brooch thing, since Evanora is the witch of the east too. I think she may be Evanora. I hope so 😛 id love to see her electric powers

But did I read on the boards somewhere that they can’t get the rights to anything from the Wizard of Oz 1939 movie?

Hm. The actual movie I don’t know? But the movie is based on a book which I do believe is public domain by now. So they can take the characters from the book and twist them like they do most their tales. But I don’t think they can use the theme song if that’s what you’re implying.

Monica: So excited for Rebecca Mader on Once Upon a Time! Can you spill anything on what she’s playing?
She’s one of the best female villains of all time, and not just in recent Disney history. This one even has her own theme music! Also, we can tell you that she is being brought in because now that Rumple and Regina have made peace, the writers felt they needed a new Big Bad and Mader’s character will definitely be at odds with Regina. We will hopefully have your very first look at Mader’s character (the new villain) on the night of Dec. 15 on E! Online, right after the episode of Once Upon a Time ends, so make sure you check back!I think she is the Wicked Witch of the West. Dec 15 is 3×10 “Going Home”. And from Oz, there’s the iconic line, “There’s no place like home.”

About two pages back but yup! Most of have jumped on the Wicked Witch bandwagon. The first pics of Mader (here and the filming thread) have her in a somewhat updated Mrs Gulch outfit.

The other books were public domain and bought by Disney ages ago, and of course there’s the recent movie.
There are MANY differences between the 1939 classic, and the books / recent movie etc etc.
It’s why when Jefferson mentions the slippers he does not colorize them (they are silver in the book, red in the movie). It’s also why many of us were puzzled when Neal threw out a line about ruby slippers because I’m pretty sure they won’t be able to use them.
Some things are standard for Oz-related stuff and can be used outright but since we all know the story from the 1939 movie, and of course they’re hoping we know the recent movie, they have a whole bunch of stuff they can use that we’re not remotely familiar with unless we’ve read the books and I could see them doing that. (For instance in the books it wasn’t a dream, Dorothy’s age was different, etc etc. It’s also why so many were confused with the recent movie and struggled to connect with it more I think. Most are used to the Oz from 1939 but much of that was what the studio decided to do with it).
I was actually coming here to post the thing about her outfit. It does look like a modern/updated version of what we’re used to seeing Mrs. Gulch wear! The jacket looks a little greenish to me and of course there’s that medallion.
We never actually *saw* the Wicked Witch of the East and there is always some debate of course, even though the same actress was Elmira Gulch / Wicked Witch of the West but I’m curious to see what they’ll do with Rebecca. She has Glinda’s hair, yet seems more Gulch-ish (which would be West) but actually WEARS green (instead of looks green – at least with what we’ve seen so far) which points to Evanora. That said, if we’re going with iconic music, I would guess West.
I’m so excited it looks like we’ll be getting Oz stuff! There have been SO many references and they’ve been there from the start! Can’t wait to see what she does with it!
I’m guessing her first appearance has to be 3×13 (pretty sure that’s what they’re filming right now which is why they released that info since she’s obviously being seen and photos get out) and that makes sense with it being “Witch Hunt.”

December 6, 2013 at 4:49 pm #228528TheWatcherParticipantI’ve seen Wicked a gazillion and one times 😉 but I believe Universal has the rights to the film version of it (which hasn’t been made) BUT Salma Hayek was adapting it into a tv miniseries based only on the novel (which means it will be dark and gritty) so I will love that 🙂 The miniserieae of Wicked is supposed to appear on ABC… Sooo

She drew her power from just as Glinda drew it from her wand and Theodora from her ruby ring. *SPOILER ALERT* When Glinda snatches the necklace off, it breaks the spell that hid the way she really looked. She was so wicked that she was an old ugly yellow hag, while her sister was a green (and much more attractive) green witch >> so if they saw her in some sort of costume and she is the witch of the east, I’m sure they saw her like that. Yellow, and haggy

Like Kansas is there is the country side of that realm.
