First of all, Rumple isn’t gone for good, and Belle has never given up on him. She’s not about to move on from him so easily, especially with the son of the man she loves. Neither has Neal given up hope of a second chance with Emma. Neal would not “go there” with Belle, the woman he knows his father loves, even if he were really grief-striken. Neal isn’t the type to try to come between two people who love each other; he’d do the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do. Also, I don’t think Belle would ever look at Neal in the same way she does his father. As far as crossing boundaries, this is a show for families, not a show just for adults. The film that introduced “Mrs. Robinson” is for adults for a reason. So I say there are some lines that just won’t be crossed.
Slurpez, we don’t know what Belle is thinking. They all think Rumple is dead. We have no idea where any of them will or won’t go with the story line. We might think something but that doesn’t make it an absolute or canon until we see it depicted on camera or verified by K&H.
The Graduate was rated PG13 and OUAT is rated PG. I wasn’t referring to the sexual content of the film, I was referring to the fact that the character Benjamin had slept with both Mrs. Robison & her daughter. For all we know, young Leopald may do the exact same thing by having a fling with young Cora and later marrying her daughter Reggie. It’s all related. 🙂
Harleygirl, thanks. 🙂 You and slurpez think along the same lines as Belle & Neal bonding more like siblings as opposed to parent/child. I’m leaning that way too. 🙂

She’s going to respect that boundary though, and so will he. I think their relationship is going to take on a familial one in the sense Neal will be like a brother to Belle, and she’ll be like a sister to him. After all, Neal is much older than Belle in terms of life experience, so she couldn’t very well be like a mother to him, but she could be like a sister. They’ll look after one another the way close siblings do.
uuuuun the only sister Bae can have and I CAN’T WAIT to see that relationship developing, is REGINA. Belle is his stepmom, Hook is his stepdad. age doesn’t matter in this show.

I’m stating my opinion, which I’m basing on what we know about Belle and Neal from established storyline so far. I never said they couldn’t go there. I simply stated why I think they won’t.
The Graduate was rated PG13 and OUAT is rated PG.
According to Turner Classic Movies, “The Graduate” is rated R, which means it’s clearly for adults. Even a PG-13 rating isn’t for kids…it’s for teenagers and older. Like you said, OUAT is PG, which means it’s also geared to grade-school kids.

But I think we’re actually on the same page about where we think the story is headed. So, no disagreement there 🙂

February 11, 2014 at 1:49 pm #244372betsypaige24ParticipantI do sorta wanna give my two cents, though. I don’t think Belle would ever be involved with Nealfire just because he is Rumple’s son. She doesn’t even view him as Neal, she calls him Baelfire—a name Neal doesn’t even use for himself until the very end of S3A. In her mind, he is the little lost boy that Rumple was trying to find for 250+ years. I don’t know if she views him as a step son or not (I think EdR and MRJ view their characters that way but it has been more or less vague on screen) but what she does view him as is Rumple’s son. And I think she knows that’s a giant red X.
YES……..and besides that, whether it’s with Neal or anyone else…..no. Much as Rumple/Gold would never love anyone else and would mourn forever, so would that be with Belle. It’s the same as with Snowing. This is never going to happen; I just think we have to allow for people to bond and become close without thinking that things are going to happen. Belle and Bae need each other and they will be good for each other.
Harley, I’m sorry, it’s just that I’ve had issues on Tumblr and so it’s easy to become defensive. I’m sorry!

If anything, at this point, Belle was “his dad’s girlfriend” and Hook was his estranged mother’s boyfriend. And also, the guy who wanted to kill his father and handed him over to Pan’s henchman, Felix. That is their relationship, so far. Hook and Belle can hardly be considered step – parents. What Neal and Belle’s relationship grows into NOW, is the question.
February 11, 2014 at 1:52 pm #244375RumplesGirlKeymasterThis whole conversation is odd.
Let’s remember a few things?
1) Rumple…not really dead. Or at least not in the forever never coming back to his loved ones dead
2) Rumple and Belle…TLK. Endgame. Done. Established
3) Neal…not going to get involved with his dad’s TL
4) Neal and Belle have a friendship that is based on the mutual love they share for Rumple. They can be friends. They can be step mom and step son. They can be siblings. However you choose to interpret. They would only “hook up” if this were HBO and not a show about fairy tales run by the Mouse.
5) Rumple. Not dead dead dead dead.
This is a perplexing conversation.

I share this opinion. I think too often people are too quick to pair off individuals in a romantic sense, but there are many forms of love. As Peter Pan told Felix, people are quick to forget that friendship and loyalty are a type of love. Platonic love isn’t less real than romantic love is. In fact, sometimes friendships last a lifetime while romances fade. Familial love is another type of strong love which isn’t based on fleeting things like “chemistry” and this is a show about family. Family can have many forms. Belle may not “officially” be family but she’s like family, and right now, Belle and the Charmings are the closest things Neal has to family.
