ParticipantI don’t know how many members on this board watch Table Top, but one of the recent episodes featured Once Upon a Time game.
Just to clarify, there is no official board game for the show (although seriously, there needs to be one with multiple lands, loyalty cards, price of magic cards, and character figurines and board expansions. Yes, I have thought a lot about this; it’s very sad but REALLY needs to happen). I also think that this is my boyfriend’s influence on me because he loves this stuff. 😆
But anyway, back to the Once Upon a Time game. It’s actually a story-telling based card game. While the story is developed by the whole group, the competitive aspect of the game is that each player has an individual goal of using all of the “Storytelling” cards he or she has in hand, and finishing the story with their own special “Happy Ever After” card.
Each player is dealt a hand of cards that represent story elements: objects, people, events, and “aspects” often involved in fairy tales (for instance, there are cards for “crown”, “key”, “stepmother”, “a death”, “time passes”, “sleeping”, et cetera). These “Storytelling” cards represent ingredients of a fairy tale, i.e. words or phrases that are likely to appear in fairy tales. From a different deck of cards, each player is also dealt a single “Happy Ever After” ending card, to be kept secret from other players until it is used. The object of the game for each player is to use their cards in telling a story, finishing the story by using their Happy Ever After card.
The storytelling aspect is fun and you can write in elements too, so the story can get crazy really quick.
Just thought I’d share.

ParticipantOoo sounds cool! Kinda reminds me of a less-structured Mad-Lib OUAT-style! (That could be fun too if you’re limited to fairy tale stuff in each category).

ParticipantIt’s a storytelling game, so it can go anyway you like. The first person to get to your “Happy Ever After” card wins. In the episode, they had robots, Global Thermal Nuclear War (like someone at the table was a fan of WarGames from the 80’s), so it doesn’t have to stay true to the traditional fairytale storytelling.
Aye, Dark Overlord follows a similar model.

ParticipantSounds like fun! It’s a lot like what I ultimately envision for my online game, “Once Upon A Game” at http://www.onceuponatimespace.com/features.html but the online game still has a long, long way to go before it’s really usable. As you can see in the discussion at https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=3019&p=41616&hilit=computer+game#p41616, I hope to eventually refine the funny sayings that are generated by the game into story elements that can be pieced together, but I haven’t had time to work on it for a while. One of these days…

ParticipantAha, we have this game (and a bajillion others… haha…^_^7) and it can be a lot of fun if your group is creative and “plays it right”. There are also blank cards, and we had a lot of fun coming up with words for those (as well as the pictures).

ParticipantI played this finally last Saturday. There’s a game store not far from me and my boyfriend invited me to come. Two of my girlfriends were there too (they were hosting a meetup). It was fun. You start out with asking who at the table looks like a natural storyteller ❓ 😆 I said, “I’ve been writing fanfiction for more than 10 years.” I didn’t start but it was fun once we got started. We didn’t have those blank cards, so no weird write-ins with aliens and robots or whatever.
The deck we were playing with was actually my boyfriends’ (he has a backpack for all his games; he’s such a gaming nerd; but hey, I write fanfiction 😆 ).
