Fandoms always develop over time their own slang, fanspeak and have a special liking for using acronyms and other forms of blending. It’s not just because of being too lazy to type full words, to reduce the stress on finger muscles and avoid typewriter’s cramp’s, but it helps as well a lot to define as fan. So far so good. But as much as fanspeak creates a warm and fuzzy feeling of being part of a wonderful family, it has as much effects of exclusivity. People new to a fandom might feel intimidated and have a hard time to join discussions, not knowing at times what the established long-time fans are talking about – and not everybody is so confident to ask.

It would be really nice if we would avoid the use of acronyms, but it looks like that is a bit futile to ask, so I have another suggestion:

Let’s make a glossary for the forum. :ugeek:

Gather and explain acronyms we use, other blendings like for example the shipping names and other terms specific to Once Upon a Time fandom.

    Internet Lingo
    OTP = One True Pairing

NOTP = any argument or arguments against a particular ship or ships

Bromance = the friendship between two people that is not romantic in nature but is special and regarded with fondness. CaptainFire and Charming/Rumple are two such examples.

BROTP = The Bromance One True Pairing.

SISTP = Best friendship between two females, non romantic.

Fanon. Stuff that isn’t from the creators but that many/most fans accept as at least a fan truth.

AU = alternate universe. Most often used in fan fiction, it is the work of a writer not associated with the show where they can let their imaginations go and create any storyline or paring they wish.

Ship (as a noun): the pairing of two individuals in a relationship (Snowing, Rumbelle, CaptainSwan, SwanFire)

Ship(as a verb): For example “I ship Rumbelle.” In other words, the ship (as a noun) you support.

Onciverse/Onceivere: The OUAT universe, the entire conceptual world of the show and the mythology in it.

Canon (non-ship): A source, or sources, considered authoritative by the fandom community. In other words, canon is what fans agree “actually” happened in a film, television show, novel. Most often it is what is seen on screen. If Adam or Eddie say or tweet something on Twitter relating to the show, it is canon. For example, it is canon that Cora was the QoH; there is no more debate about this.

Canon (ship): Very contentious but a couple is canon if they have been or are in a romantic relationship. This does not mean that they are canon+end game (see below) but that they were at one point romantically linked. Canon couples include those that are end game (Snowing and Rumbelle) but also ones that were linked at one point (SwanFire/ Hook and Milah)

Canon+End game (ship): The romantic pairing of two people that has been established as the relationship they will be in until the end of the series. This relationship is unbreakable, though often fraught with danger. Canon+End Game is often demonstrated through TLK, such as Snowing and Rumbelle. In many ways there is no way to know if a couple is canon+end game until the end of the series.

Headcanon: An idea, belief, or aspect of a story that is not mentioned in the media itself, but is accepted by either the reader themselves or the fandom in general. If it is confirmed by the author of the story, it becomes canon.

Stan: an overly (dangerously) obsessed fan of a celebrity, be it musician, athlete, actor. Is described as a blend (portmanteau) of stalker and fan. First used for fans of musicians but is spreading to all kind of celebrities, and eventually as well might spread in use to label the most obsessive fans of a character. Said to be based on the song “Stan” by Eminem (recorded 1999, originally with Dido. Song tells the story of a fictional person named Stanley “Stan” Mitchell, who claims to be the biggest fan of Eminem, doing some really crazy stuff)

Theory : a postulate (a suggested explanation) rather than a theory (an explanation that has been rigorously and repeatedly tested and confirmed).
