Syndication means that other networks have the option to pick up the show once it has hit 88 episodes and air on their own network. This is why you see shows like Greys or Bones on other networks that are not ABC/Fox. Syndication is a big thing for the original networks because it means a TON of money coming in for them having their product aired all the time. That’s why there is no doubt, really, in anyone’s mind that ONCE will get renewed. ABC wants to be able to put it in syndication at TNT or or another network. I’m not sure it would stay on the ABC family channel just because branching out could mean more money. Even shows that are really hurting in the ratings, like Revenge, will probably be renewed. ABC is willing to maybe a take a loss with a 4th season if it means another network will pick it up and bring in revenue that way.
