ABC changes rules for watching shows online; bad news for ‘Castle,’ ‘Once Upon a Time’ fans?
MAJOR BAD NEWS AFFECTING ON LINE VIEWING OF ONCE
[adrotate group="5"]January 2, 2014 at 4:27 pm #234915RumplesGirlKeymasterIt does suck that ABC is doing that. I hate that Fox does it and it just means that I never use their site to watch missed shows, I do it illegally through download or streaming. Looks like more people will probably turn to that for ABC as well now which means our Live+next day’s may go down, something that has always boosted us in the past.

Live+Next Day ratings don’t take streaming into account, because Hulu and ABC.com don’t have the same ads that play during the original broadcast. It just accounts for DVR. Streaming views are measured, sure, but they’re treated as a separate thing.

It’s a huge problem in the fandom as a whole. Remember the internet culture fandom is an incredibly small portion of of the total viewingship. Like what you like and don’t like what you don’t like. It’s all fine. The Live+7 day for Going Home just came in. Initial Rating: 1.9 Live+7: 3.1 Increase: 63% http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/12/30/live7-dvr-ratings-the-big-bang-theory-tops-adults-18-49-viewership-gains-grimm-leads-percentage-increase-in-week-12/225568/
Thank you, I wanted to catch up on ratings news and I thought for minute I clicked on the “Hook’s a jerk” thread instead.
I’m really wondering how this mini season thing is gonna end up panning out for us it didn’t seem that we lost all that many viewers as the season went on and for the most part we stayed pretty solid. I enjoyed the Neverland arc, Peter Pan has been my favorite villain of the series focusing on just a small part of the cast I think was a good move. Robert Carlyle isn’t gonna be in a few episodes to start 3B is he? Hopefully that doesn’t hurt us in the ratings too.

Well overall the ratings didn’t rapidly fluctuate. From 301-311 we lost .7 in demos which isn’t too horrible. So that’s good. So I think the breaking into two halves with almost no breaks did help.
So far no one is really sure what is happening with Bobby. If he is in 312-314, then he’s been doing a lot of greenscreen/indoor work without us knowing.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 4, 2014 at 11:26 pm #235226Jenna_BParticipantRight now their ratings actually haven’t been bad, when you consider they’ve had the best scripted numbers a number of weeks. In the fall, their ratings are expected to fall; they’re on Sundays and up against football. The spring is a whole different ballgame.
They’ll have at least a S4. They’re going to at least get enough episodes to get into syndication. They’ll see how it does in syndication and that will likely determine how many seasons OUAT goes. That’s driving a lot of network decisions regarding shows lately, because they just can’t figure out how to analyze the ratings with technology constantly changing. And syndication can be surprising. Big Bang Theory has been on forever, always got good ratings, but exploded when they went into syndication. Syndication is also good for shows because for the networks, it’s easy money – no new product, but it generates ad sales and viewership. Supernatural’s another example – the show runners came to an agreement with the network to end after S5 but the ratings went UP that season…so they hit syndication, and now they’re on S9 and S10’s a lock. OUAT is a good candidate for syndication, too, because it can be run during “family friendly” times, like the 7:00 hour.
The thing that actually concerns me is Adam’s references to “a new way of storytelling”. What does that mean? Fewer flashbacks? Different types of time jumps? New characters? Plot driven or character driven storylines? Just taking advantage of the fact that they are guaranteed a straight 11 weeks of new epis? Is “a new way of storytelling” going to lose/retain/generate viewers? That’s what I’m curious about.
January 5, 2014 at 12:14 am #235235hookianBlockedDang I must taste the bitter juice in this thread from people whom don’t like Hook, oh well. Thankfully that’s just a minority opinion since Hook is very much a popular character not only to the social media networks(the most marketed character on the show with the most articles) the official FB and OUAT twitters give him the most spotlight and in 2013 the CS kiss article got the most likes based on the show with over 300,000 likes and comments. The only one to surpass it was the announcement that Ginny and Josh were having a baby which had over 600,000 comments but that did not happen on the show or with Snow and Charming so that’s null and void.
Screentime charts on tumblr have shown this season so far that Hook has the most screen time. Followed by Emma, Regina, Snow, Charming, Rumple, Henry, Neal and Belle in last.
What’s shocking to me is that in S2 despite Colin getting injured and being sidelined for a lot of episodes he still ended up with the most screen time after the big 5(Snow, Regina, Emma, Charming, Rumple). Then again though ABC media even said that they want more Hook on the show. There was a joke that the higher ups saw a scene and they were like “can Hook be in this” and Adam was like “it’s Henry on a swing”, and they were like “well Hook can meet Henry.” Adam laughed and considered it. It was a joke but you get what I’m saying.
Couple screen time going from multiple charts shows Captain Swan had the most screen time so far(and with what happened at the end of the finale I don’t expect that to change) Snowing, Rumbelle, Swan Thief. I only found data on these 4.
The media writes articles about Hook because they know that writing articles on him and Captain Swan means people(even haters) will click and comment on their articles which by default makes them more money. The traffic from these articles as they have seen goes a long way and the best part of all is you can see the track because they keep a tab on the homepage of the social media site to see which stories have the most clicks and when it comes to Hook and Emma they’re always on the top 5 easily.
So I guess the point is be bitter all you want because the media knows what gives them the money, it knows what gives them the views. Ultimately in the end it’s a business and that’s the fact. Hook brings them the money, he and CS bring in the money.
As far as ratings I think it’s performing very well and in an age where people no longer have to go by the TV schedule and watch it at the time it airs can watch it through multiple methods the next day.

Well you sure said it better than I could lol, also just to add in a couple more things being on lists like this one
(Hey look at that number one) just show how well these two characters are being received.
CS was also nominated for a People’s Choice Award but that’s probably because all the Oncers from all the different ships decided to help with the voting despite them not being Captain Swan shippers themselves… oh wait that’s right that didn’t happen lol

Yeah that didn’t happen, in fact the haters teamed up to try to get CS eliminated before the top 5 were announced. Which is kind of rude because when Rumbelle, Snowing or any other couple was nominated for anything they asked for assistance from every fandom including CS but when CS was nominated they were just bitter because it was them instead of their couple.
That’s pretty two face to me, but yeah it didn’t work and CS had over 500,000 votes in the PCA polls, we lost but we came in 3rd. Which is pretty amazing, I mean think about it this couple has only been around for less than 20 episodes yet they actually put up a fight against the likes of Klaine(glee couple for 3 seasons) and Delena(couple for 5 seasons). It’s pretty dang telling of the support of CS and the commitment to fans.
January 5, 2014 at 3:38 am #235258sweetgrassParticipantI think this first half of season 3 suffered for uneven pacing. I think after the third episode people were expecting to see the plot move more quickly, to have more confrontations with Pan, more hero victories instead of wandering around. it is a shame because with this Pan, Tinkerbell and Hook — all of whom have amazing chemistry with each other and are amazing actors — we should have had more interactions and interesting scenes with them. there should have been swordfights with Pan. we should have a greater understanding of Tinkerbell and her relationship with Pan and Hook and even Bae, We should know more about Hook and Bae. Instead it felt like an drawnout overlong quest so that the Rumple Pan reveal could happen near the end of the arc. There was no reason that they needed this to be in Neverland since most of the iconic Neverland relationships/adventures were given lip service and not showcased in any way. Look at the Darlings, it was almost like they were an item on check list rather than woven into the show. The thing is I wouldn’t want this to be all about Hook and Pan. I don’t think it is fair to other character’s fans, but I don’t think A&E made effective use of the Neverland characters. With the non-never land characters they should have been focusing on their evolving relationships and feelings for each other.
Getting back to my point, my sister won’t watch OUAT because she feels like they never move forward and everything gets reset. Someone watching this arc would feel that way for the middle episodes. I think that is what hurt. Beginning with A Common Fairy (which I really liked) the episodes seemed more like filler episodes to get to Save Henry. I also think that they need to rethink the flashback usage. I don’t think that every episode needs them, unless something entirely new is being shown/explained. I think it would be better to use that time to start giving more emotional character moments in the present.
Keeper of Hook and Emma's smoldering first kiss, a certain Pirate's sauciness, the Evil Queen's snarkiness, Grumpy's gruffness and a drop of true love to make it all go down smooth.
