That is a long winter break, but I would prefer that over mini breaks throughout the season.

However there may be some new viewers or they gain back some viewers they lost with the sporadic breaks. This is why, though, they are telling people now so that viewers can get use to the idea. I agree with this being an Olympic year this is a better model. I can say right now that given the choice between Once and the figure skating competition, that starts on Sunday night after the opening ceremonies, I would watch the figure skating. I could always watch Once on Hulu the day after.
The other thing is that traditional models for scheduling aren’t working. They are losing viewers and need to do something to retain the audience they already have and also build an audience. As has been stated before other networks use this model for their shows and it has helped immensely in the ratings. I’m sure ABC is willing to try anything that might make the ratings go back up on some of their shows. Again this is why they are telling us now. Once we have a start date it will be easy to figure out when the break is. Besides for people who follow these messageboards people will make sure the information gets out there so people know when it starts, when the breaks are, and when it starts back up again. It doesn’t have to be guesswork.

Surely one, long, consistent block of eps on every week is easier to follow than 2 weeks on, 3 weeks off, 1 week on, 2 weeks off, etc? If the schedule is consistent for a full half of the season, it means people get into the routine of tuning in every week, and the story is easier to follow because it’s not constantly stopping and starting.

Yep, and if viewers are fine with the split season model for other shows, why can’t they adapt the same for Once? I believe the way they intend for Once Season 3 is for each split season to have its own story arc, so in a sense think of it as two mini Seasons.
May 16, 2013 at 4:13 pm #194850HappyEndingsSpectatorYou know it depends on the people and what their schedule is not what ABC schedule is if you prefer this schedule good for you but have you even consider that it isn’t the schedule the problem Once has been following off on the good writing skills and stories like they had in Season 1. What about all the actors leaving do you think it is because of the scheduling no it is the writting, and the fan base I believe will continue to drop with this new schedule plus losing their favorite actors.
So what the Olympic’s will be on not everyone watches the Olympics like they used to and the same thing with the award shows, football, basketball. If that is their excuse then Once will never be able be aired if people are using these excuses for the droppings in the ratings. Once only comes on once a week it isn’t like it a daily show 😡
Someone should post what last years ratings per episode vs this year and maybe you can see what I am talking about.

The story telling was more complicated this year. S1 had one goal: get Emma to believe so that she can break the curse. It wasn’t THAT ambitious. This season had bigger stories and was far more ambitious. Ambitious story telling coupled with crazy hiatus breaks are what hurt the ratings. I want ambitious story telling. But I don’t want the crazy breaks.

One actor left. ONE. The way H and K wanted to tell S2 changed, but that’s understandable. All writing is rewriting and things are bound to change. I’m sorry that Meghan is leaving but she found work again super fast and we will see her again. And with regards to the fan base dropping, everyone who is posting in this thread is on board. We’re a small sampling, to be sure, but we’re part of the base. The long winter will be long but…it’s better than the strange schedule we had this season.

Maybe, but the Olympics are still a powerhouse even if not as many people watch them as they used to. And I mean POWERHOUSE. They pull in million upon millions upon millions of viewers. Every show is going to take a break for them, not just us. No one survives going up against them. It’s the same with big sporting events. There is a reason there are repeats during the Big Events: because no one will watch a serialized drama up against a big event when they can watch it next day on Hulu.
EDIT
Re: The Olympics: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/13/london-olympics-2012-ratings-most-watched-ever_n_1774032.html
Article from the Summer Olympics in 2012. 31.1. million views a night?? That’s MENTAL.
EDIT #2
HappyEndings: If you’re upset by this new schedule, I understand but I do *hope* you’ll give it a chance before you dismiss the show altogether. You can’t judge a show season to season or by the scheduling."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 16, 2013 at 5:06 pm #194863lisasParticipantI think this will help the ratings tremendously This type of schedule has worked will for NBC’s Revolution and as Matthew & RG have said this type of schedule has worked well for original programming that airs on cable networks.. While I am not thrilled by a 3 month hiatus I can certainly understand why ABC would want to set up this way for Season 3 given how inconsistent the scheduling was this past season so I can live it.
