KeymasterWe have recieved a 1.8 in demos for this week. Hopefully that’ll end up being adjusted up a tenth. http://www.spoilertv.com/2015/03/ratings-news-16th-march-2015.html
Pretty big drop, though OUAT was still the number 1 show last night. Daylight Savings definitely did a number on all the shows. It’ll probably adjust up to a 1.9, too. Question is, will these numbers drop even more?
Based on fan reaction to 414, I’d say yes. Though, I’m willing to bet not significantly.

But Daylight Savings was last week, not this week. And the ratings were much higher last week, too.

DST still continues to take effect during this time period. It’s not just the one week. Look at how low the other shows did. Anyway, the important thing to the network is that the show got the highest rating of the night. As low as it is, that 1.8 ratings number is the highest of the night.

KeymasterWhile we’re waiting for final number for 414, now seems as good a time as any to review what DST means since there is a question about it. I agree with both Slurpeez and Matt in what they are saying.
DST *does* affect TV viewing, especially the 8pm TV shows because 8pm now feels like 7pm. People stay out later, go out to eat, DVR their shows instead of making sure they are home in time. The problem then becomes well when are they getting caught up on their shows–the same day, next day, 4 days from now. The longer people wait to watch the less their viewership matters to networks and ad buyers.
So I agree that DST played into 413’s ratings drop (as to be expected probably for the rest of the season as the weather gets nicer). What I think it more important, though, is that DST was not the only factor. DST should have caused a hit, but not as significant as the one 413 took. Maybe .1 or .2 drop, but dropping the amount we did? That’s DST PLUS something else–lack of interest, other TV programming, or giving up altogether.
It makes watching the ratings for the rest of the season interesting because the drop in ratings is only likely continue as spring/summer approaches. The 1.8 is *very* close to our series low and if we hit the series low this early in the QoD arc then it’s unlikely that it will rise again, instead it will slip further and we’ll end 4B having a new series low.

ModeratorAs it stands, TVByTheNumbers still has the show as “certain to be renewed”:
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2015/03/17/abc-predictions-last-man-standing-is-likely-to-be-renewed/If the show’s renewal chances get adjusted down within the next few weeks, I honestly don’t see it being downgraded past “more than likely to be renewed.”

Oh to be sure. There’s no chance we aren’t getting a S5. The question really becomes how much money ABC will shill out–12 episodes or 22. As it stands, I’d say we’re looking at a 22 episode S5 just because the numbers aren’t egregiously bad. This IS the fourth season of a show that is heavily couched in its own mythology—and any show that operates under that is going to be losing viewers the longer it goes on because people get tired on them not answering questions or losing track of the shows history, ect.
Even if we hit a new series low (and it’s looking like we might because I expect 415 to be another drop just because 414 was so negatively received) it won’t be as bad as some other series lows on other shows. We’re still a decent chunk away from WL ratings, for instance. Or CW ratings. I’d say we won’t go below a 1.4 this season (if we even hit that). So that’s perfectly acceptable for a show that has been on the air this long, is this kind of show, and has reached a natural “death” instead of an early one.

Funny thing is, I noticed elsewhere (social media and other sites) that plenty of people actually did enjoy the last episode, so I would say the reception was more mixed overall than anything. Our forum’s reception was definitely overall negative, but we’re just a small part of the fandom.
Anyway, I agree overall with what you said. At this point, if Once were to end within the next Season or so, I feel ABC would plan it that way in advanced. The show is still important to the ABC brand, and they would want the show to go out with a bang, rather than just cancelling it abruptly once ratings drop to the lowest threshold.

ParticipantWe’re assured a season 5 like RG mentioned but to piggyback on her example of 12 vs 22 episodes for Season 5, it’s also what budget the show will actually get for it’s next season.
Ad rates are based on ratings so a show with ratings that have fallen still might be a viable show to buy air time during but maybe at a lower rate. Therefore the show brings in less money. Less money translates into less episodes and/or lower budget. So for our show it could mean less special effects, smaller budgets for costuming or even casting cuts.
The ratings watch isn’t always about just cancellation vs. renewal.

True. I’ll give my 415 prediction as a 1.7 or 1.8. We will either have a very small drop or stay steady.

Just like they did with LOST. Everyone knew after S3 that LOST would end at S6 and that each season would be a shortened one. ABC had discussed it with Damon and Carlton and they had reached an accord about it. I think they’d give Adam and Eddy the same courtesy. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in S3B, ABC came to A and E and said, “you’ve got two seasons left. Make them count and you’ll have our full backing and support.” So they ditched whatever the ending for 3B was going to be (who came out of the urn…) and went Frozen for 4A so that they could do it before the show went off the air, then they decided on the QoD storyline so that they could play with Mal and Ursula again, and bring in Curella, someone they’ve long talked about playing with.
Everyone’s prediction is Aladdin for 5A (which would pretty much cover the huge Disney Renaissance movies) and then 5B is “The Return Home” or something

OUAT’s budget seriously confuses me. This is a show in which like 60% of the shots must be done Green Screen Style yet the effects are getting poorer (Dragon Mal, anyone?). But yet they brought in Michael Soccha (and not Robin?) who is pretty much getting maybe 2-5mins each episode (if that!) and has done very little in the grand scheme of things. Was it because Soccha had a contract with WL and thus was open to price negotiations? Was he a cheaper actor?
I would hate to see the CGI for this show with a further slashed CGI budget…
