ModeratorThe other issue ABC has is that it has continued to struggle launching a new show on Sundays. The only show following Once to debut on Sunday that lasted more than 1 Season thus far was Resurrection, but even that is now certain to be cancelled after its lackluster 2nd Season. Yeah Revenge has lasted just as long as Once so far, but that didn’t move to Sundays until Season 2. Every other show ABC has tried to launch on Sundays has been a dud, and got canned after only half a Season. It doesn’t help that Sundays for network TV are decaying overall, especially with the rise of stiff competition from cable shows the same night. So while Once has been declining in viewership, I feel ABC is reluctant to replace it for the time being. Of course the show will have to end at some point, but figuring out what could replace it is easier said than done, based on the factors I mentioned before. That’s the TV biz for you. Taking risks and seeing what sticks.

ModeratorOUAT’s budget seriously confuses me. This is a show in which like 60% of the shots must be done Green Screen Style yet the effects are getting poorer (Dragon Mal, anyone?). But yet they brought in Michael Soccha (and not Robin?) who is pretty much getting maybe 2-5mins each episode (if that!) and has done very little in the grand scheme of things. Was it because Soccha had a contract with WL and thus was open to price negotiations? Was he a cheaper actor?
I would hate to see the CGI for this show with a further slashed CGI budget…
I am convinced they spent a lot of the budget on the Frozen half of the Season, because they knew they had to make it look decent to attract all the potential new viewers watching just for Frozen. Notice how we didn’t even get new promotional photos of the cast like we normally do this Season. The Michael Socha’s situation is definitely odd, as logically it would have made a lot more sense to make Sean a regular instead. It probably was a contract or budgeting reason. As for how bad the CGI budget could get, I think Wonderland gives us a pretty good idea, sans the White Rabbit of course (who looked amazing).

Oh boy. That green screen of death—the yellow road one. *shudder*
(Bunny is amazing. I miss him)

ParticipantI was wondering about this particular episode. Is it the content that turned people off?

Ratings for a current episode are dependent on a few things:
1) What else is on? Sunday night at 8pm finds few things in the way of serious and direct competition for us. It’s only Madame Secretary (Animation Domination does not count as DIRECT comp because it’s not an hour long drama even though it does hurt the demo and total viewers). MS is doing well enough for a CBS show but it has a totally different demo expectation. It isn’t bringing in the sort of 18-49 yr old viewers that OUAT does. Thus why every week MS beats us for overall viewers but never beats us for the demo. But apart from MS, there is nothing on broadcast to compete. Cable is a different beast but even then…8pm on a Sunday isn’t exactly a cable feast. TWD, the biggest threat, doesn’t start until 9. GOT is returning in April, but again, that’s at 9.
2) The time of year. Ratings are higher in the winter and lower in the spring. That’s just the nature of the beast.
3) The episode that last aired. People make their decision about if they are going to tune in live, DVR it, or not tune in at all based on the above but also on what happened last week. If the episode before (in this case 413) was good, then they’ll tune in to see the next one. 412 was strong enough that 413 did equally well. 413 was less good so 414 took a hit (plus the other stuff). It could be that 413 had something (who knows what since each individual viewer is different) that turned people off.
4) Promo materials. For your average viewer, the only thing they see as far as promotional material are the actual promos. 414 wasn’t a bad promo–it had Regina, someone who is loved quite a bit by audiences at large, or so it seems.

ModeratorIn regards to what could have turned people off from watching this week based on the previous episode:
1) The Scarlet Beauty reveal. There are still plenty of dedicated Rumbelle fans out there, regardless of how low the show has taken that relationship. Doesn’t help that it came out of nowhere.
2) Snow and Charming acting shady with Emma, in regards to hiding their past dealings with the Queens of Darkness. I could see this being a turn off for casuals, as this may have been viewed as out of character for quite a few.
3) The overall pace of the episode was very slow.March 17, 2015 at 1:59 pm #298927RumplesGirl

Agreed that this was probably a factor and didn’t help. For your average Joe OUAT viewer, they likely did not tune into WL (or if they did, gave it up early) and thus have zero to no impression about Will Scarlet. They might not even remember that he’s on the show until he randomly pops into a scene. So Belle suddenly kissing a guy that they have no lasting impression of is jarring.

ModeratorOnce remains flat at a 1.8 demo rating and 5.69 million viewers. The only scripted show that technically beat it was Last Man on Earth at 9pm with a 1.9, but 1) That’s a half hour comedy. It’s 2nd episode at 9:30 actually scored a 1.6. It will be interesting to see what next week brings.

ParticipantRatings: ‘POOR UNFORTUNATE SOUL’ – INITIAL RATINGS – Once Upon A Time earned a 1.8 (and 5.69 million viewers), staying steady from last week’s 1.8 adults 18-49 rating, only slightly down from last week’s 5.89 million viewers.
Even though the key demo stayed steady at 1.8 (which is still low compared to 4a, only being beaten by series low of 1.7 in S3b), it’s actually not a good thing that overall viewership is falling. That means the General Audience (those older and younger than the key demo) are tuning out. And when the GA isn’t happy, it’s never “good news.”
