The rumors are born : ABC is thinking about an OuaT spin-off WITH the MadHatter, but without Sebastian Stan (yeah, what would be the point of that?)

But really, if you were in charge, what would a spin-off look like? It doesn’t have to be Mad-Hatter, it could be anything you like.

To start off, some of my ideas:
Madhatter: He is a porthole jumper so are we getting a fairy tale Stargate? How Jefferson got the hat in the first place and his travels from world to world. They could go for a younger Jefferson, but really Sebastian Stan isn’t THAT old.

Peter Pan: Young Bae lands in Neverland, gets his name, has adventures, travels to earth once in a while, maybe meets a young JM Barrie, Wendy, picks up lost boys, hooks up with Hook, gets a fascination for watches and so on.

Frankenstein: I really see this working as a mature and dark version. A steampunk background, and interweave it with all the victorian horror and mystery literature you can find. Sherlock, Jules Verne, Dracula, Moby Dick even (very befitting to how Frankenstein dies). Anders’s Frankenstein has this analytical brain and cool stand-offish character that could make this work.

Much of this could be done in front of the green screen… And maybe they should run for a limited time, one or two seasons, adding to OuaT rather than detracting from it. A filler for the off-season, when nothing better is on TV.

    Love to hear your ideas!

I would take inspiration from two successful spin offs- Angel and Torchwood. Darker in tone than their mainstream series- Buffy the vampire Slayer and Doctor Who respectively, both spin offs took a popular but not main character and focussed on them, giving them new characters to interact with, sometimes having main characters from the mainstream series guest starring in episodes, and also having storylines that don’t necessarily impact on the mainstream series. It should be a kind of what the character gets up to between their appearances in the mainstream series.

First thing to consider: When should the spin off take place? Past or present? I would say present. You can’t really do any life or death situations in the past because you know the character survives to be in Storybrooke. Also what is the tone of the show going to be: Darker, same, lighter? I would go for the same tone as OUAT.

Next: Which character? All of the big names are out ( Snow, Charming, Rumple, Belle, Henry, Regina and Hook) Jefferson would be a good one- going with the present day thing, it would be what he’s doing when he’s not in OUAT- We can see him being a single father, trying to bring up his daughter and also supporting the two of them. You can have humour if some of the single ladies of Storybrooke take a shine to Jefferson.

Archie, Grumpy and the Dwarves, Perhaps even regular guest appearance from Red and Granny if the spin off characters drop by Granny’s diner during each episode.

The main character of the spinoff needs to be someone who the audience has already been introduced to on OUAT whilst the rest of the characters can be ones who haven’t yet appeared on OUAT.

All magic comes with a price!
