I noticed major parallels between this episode and The NeverEnding Story. I mentioned a few weeks ago that when they said “the darkness is coming”, it made me think “the nothing is coming”. But I didn’t expect the result to be this similar!

I can not speak to the book, but the movie was a big part of my childhood, and I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. It is a classic 80’s movie. 🙂

For those who have not seen it, here is a brief summary of what I thought was similar to this episode.

A 10 year old boy in the “real world” is reading a book about a fantasy land, and to his surprise the characters in the book are occasionally aware of things he (the reader) says or thinks.

The main peril is that the fantasy land is being destroyed, as people in the real world become more cynical. The less people use their imagination, the more the land of imagination begins to disappear. This destruction takes the form of a big dark storm called “the nothing”, which swallows up people and places as they cease to exist.

Eventually, all but a tiny bit of the fantasy world is destroyed, until the boy who is reading the book takes an active role in willing it all back into existence.

Oh, and one more thing: at the end of this episode, they realize that Henry’s book is finished but does not say “the end”. Snow comments that it may be the end of this book, but it’s not the end of their story! Neverending story! 😀
