I have a theory that it’s a parasitic organism of sorts, and therefore it’s quite possible that it would significantly modify the behavior of its host to accommodate its own ends (as parasites in the real world do). If it is a parasite, the question becomes what kind? Some parasites tend to completely highjack the host’s nervous system and radically alter behavior (for example, by making the host act in a suicidal way when the parasite reaches a particular point of its developmental cycle).
I think so as well. As stated in another thread, the darkness sounds a lot like the symbiote/black goo alien thing that turns spiderman and eddie brock into Venom:
– why it didn’t just hang out as darkness, outside of a host. It seems that it needs a soul to latch onto.
We know the darkness didn’t want a host, but to consume all the realms. Merlin was the one who attached it to a host (a human soul). In that sense, it sounds like Galactus, the world eater. Now I know OUAT probably wont be pulling any marvel stops but its an interesting thought 😛
– the abysmal S4 Rumple OOC — if Rumple was a dying host, it’s no wonder he was spinning out of control by the end
Ya kno, I was just thinking what if the Darkness feeds off the love/goodness in a person’s heart? Rumpel had been the DO for 3 centuries and had very little of it left. Then Bae dies. So he has even left. The Darkness was almost complete and Rumpel was changing drastically.
– why, once freed from Rumple, the darkness didn’t return to him — it’d go out to look for the strongest, most fit organism. What the parameters of that is, I’m not sure, but presumably Regina was a good fit, as was Emma
I think Emma also said it was sucking away all the light, didn’t she? Maybe it went after the two lightest beings, Emma and Regina. Regina was using Light Magic afterall and Emma is TL so it was happy to consume them first.
But back to the question at hand: Will Rump try to off Emma? Even with his heart cleared and sanctified, people can still make CHOICES, some good and some bad. Rumpel is no sugary sweet goodie-goodie and he wont stay that way forever. So will he try to kill Emma? I can go either way at this point. My mind hops back and forth between yes and no. Yep. It can also help explain the apparent floundering. (As in, no, it’s not bad writing, it’s the curse!)

Yes, but that’s really the question. If you don’t know the nature of something, it might appear purposeful when it’s actually just following some kind of basic law of physics. (I’m blanking on a good example. Pulsars, maybe?). The darkness could be seeking some kind of baseline condition. Knowing OUAT, it will be BOTH *twitch*
May 20, 2015 at 5:48 am #305079PriceofMagicParticipantI posted this in the Darkness thread.
I also had a crack theory on why certain people are chosen to be the dark one based on what the apprentice said about strength of the heart. Why the darkness went for Regina, the apprentice, and then Emma and not Snowing, Robin, or Hook. It’s not to do with magic, since Rumple had no magic when he became the dark one, it’s to do with the strength of the heart, the strength to carry on despite what obstacles life throws at you.
Rumple, Emma and Regina have had difficult lives, probably the most difficult of the main characters. They’ve lost people but they’ve carried on surviving regardless, they’ve pulled through. Compare this to Hook and Snowing who have a death wish when it comes to losing loved ones. Hook went on a suicidal mission to avenge Milah whilst Snow was ready to die if the heart splitting failed to save Charming because she couldn’t bear to live without him. Hook and Snow were ready to give up on life whilst Rumple, Emma and Regina had the will to survive.
All magic comes with a price!

Maybe? Because it did go to the Apprentice first and I wouldn’t say he is anything special outside of magical. Maybe that’s it? When the Darkness seeks someone out of its own volition, the person needs to be someone who has magic?

It should have zoomed over the covenant.

I do like this, but the Darkness never went after Emma. It left the shop after she forced it out of the Apprentice. She chose to engage it by using the Dagger. I do think the fact that Emma chose to host the Darkness without killing the Dark One will have ramifications for how things play out.
May 23, 2015 at 10:46 am #305139Grace HeatherParticipantI think that Rumple will ultimately be redeemed and learn to be better in S5, but I hate the idea of him waking up a completely new person with a completely blank slate, thus getting the easy way out, essentially not even be the same character, and most importantly not have to struggle to learn anything. That defeats the whole purpose of true redemption. I think that Rumple should initially relapse because it’s the only way that I can see him undergoing genuine character development, and finally learning to accept and take total responsibility for all of the horrible decisions that he’s made, not just because of the curse’s influence, but because of his own selfish cowardice, insecurities, and magic-addiction. That’s the only sincere way that I could start to see him gradually changing by learning to make the braver right decisions more often. I feel that Rumple getting caught in the act of trying to kill Emma to take the curse back before he could go through with it by someone like Belle or Henry would be a perfect way to finally stir up that wake up call of self-awareness in Rumple. Without being able to use the dark curse’s influence as an excuse anymore, he’ll begin to realize the truth about himself, and learn to be braver. We definitely know that Rumple is capable of being strong and brave enough to make the choice if he really makes a genuine effort by really fighting is own cowardice and darkness from his big sacrifice for Henry, Bae’s son, in season 3A. Even if it wasn’t exactly 100% selfless, considering the fact that it was for the sake of his own family, doing that took a lot of courage, and was a momentarily big character progression for Rumple before everything went to pieces for Rumple after his resurrection, Bae’s death, and Zelena controlling him in season 3B. Since then, Rumple really has turned into a true beast this season, regressing back even further from his starting point back in S1 and S2. Even back then, I didn’t really even consider Rumple/Gold a true villain, just a cowardly, selfish, broken, clever, dark, mysterious, magic-addicted, and mischievous imp of a man, who liked to make deals and stir up trouble for fun, personal benefit, occasional revenge, and to ultimately help him get another step closer to finding his son. He didn’t really progress in those seasons, but he was still pretty consistent and had limits. It’s about time the curse was broken for the sake of Rumple’s ultimate character development and redemption, but it will feel like a major sellout and disappointment if Rumple just wakes up magically purified and instantly transformed into a better person. Regina wasn’t, she earned redemption. True redemption for character development should be totally earned through the character’s own, gradual, and gretly struggled for efforts to change for the better before it can earn them happiness, especially for a character like Rumple. He doesn’t have to be a hero, I’d feel disappointed if he really became one, actually, but I’m getting tired of him being the villain, and he should progress more in a similar way that he was initially struggling and progressing to do good and redeem himself in the Peter Pan/Neverland arc, except not getting killed this time around.
