Peter Pan as the Pied Piper really just gave me the creeps the whole dancing around the fire bit then at the end when Henry could hear it? It was extremely cool how they tied it all together.

RUMPLE: What are you doing here?
PAN: It’s lonely in Neverland. The only friends I have are the children who visit in their dreams.
But they can’t stay. The boys I take back with will. The only interesting thing is that he said, that the only friends he have are children who visit it through their dream? Somehow I’m thinking about that Metallica song now.

I though that was interesting too. Neverland is run on imagination and I guess dreams are really just imagination given to run freely? But it also makes it sound like the Red Room where part of your soul goes when you sleep.

I do have to agree with Jeremy in the initial reactions, however. I think Henry being able to hear the pipes by the end of the episode was a bit to quick of a turn around. I understand it was because of Peter’s speech just before that, reminding him that his father was dead. In that moment, Henry felt lost and he could hear the pipes. I just hope this isn’t a permanent thing. After all, he is supposed to be the Truest Believer… you would think he wouldn’t give up hope on his family finding him so quickly.

October 25, 2013 at 6:56 am #218605PheeParticipantWas listening to the Once Upon A Fan podcast and someone on there suggested something which I don’t think I’ve seen discussed on the forums, (apologies if it has been and I missed it). She said she thinks Pan is full of crap and wasn’t actually playing the music for Henry the first time, which is why he couldn’t hear anything. So I thought about it a bit, and we know that only boys who feel lost are supposed to hear it, but Henry doesn’t know that.
Henry: Sorry, I don’t hear anything.
Pan: Interesting. You see, this pipe’s enchanted, Henry. It can only be heard by certain children.
Henry: Like who?
Pan: You’ll find out soon enough. I promise. As far as Henry knows, it’s a good thing to be able to hear the music. It makes you awesome and special if you can hear the music. So maybe Pan faked him out that first time by not actually playing at all, and then set him up to want to be able to hear it, and then the second time he did actually play it, and Henry heard it and was all, “WOOT, I’m one of the cool peeps who can hear the song now, I totally rule, gotta dance.” That would mean that Pan has won Henry over without having to weaken his belief at all. Pan didn’t have to convince Henry to lose belief in his family, he just gave him something new to believe in as well. And now that he’s got the kid on the hook, he can reel him in without Henry even realising what’s being done to him.

Oh that’s good! It’s part of Pan’s game. He more or less engineered Henry hearing the pipes. Pan wasn’t upset when Nealfire got past Felix because now the stakes of the game were higher.

I’m guessing it’s not an all-at-once conversion, but just a sign of one step along the road Pan wants him to follow. I assumed it was brought about by the momentary sadness of Henry’s “dream” about his dad. I think we’ll see a lot more events like this in the coming episodes as Pan tries to gradually win over Henry. Phee’s comment about Pan faking it the first time might be true too, but I think either way we’re going to see a lot more small steps like this before Henry falls too far under Pan’s spell.

The story of the god Pan’s flute does involve a nymph, which I guess could maybe be replace by a (Blue) Fairy if they wanted to twist it up somehow…
(Also, he once had a musical showdown with Apollo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_(mythology)#Pan_and_music )
Yes, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll bring in more references to the god Pan than just the Pan flute (which has traditionally been associated with Peter Pan). After all, we’ve already seen King Midas on Once and he is also in Ovid’s account of the musical showdown between Pan and Apollo. And the way Midas gets his ears changed into donkey ears at the end of the tale reminds me of the chapter in Pinocchio in which the boys on Pleasure Island get changed into donkeys. I realize they probably won’t do that since we’ve already established other stories for Midas and Pinocchio, but it’s always a good Once skill to look for similarities.
