ParticipantThe show 24 from season 4 until season 8 have all been non stop seasons, every single week from start to finish, no hiatus. A typical season is 20 to 26 episodes

ParticipantIt is very unusual in America for shows to not have hiatuses. Almost all shows do.

ParticipantAlso ridiculously rare, a genre show surviving on one of the broadcast networks.
Season 4 of Alias also ran non-stop January-May. The later Lost seasons also all did runs from Jan/Feb-May. They were both on ABC. It’s just something channels can do when they have a show that is very very serialized. They found the ratings did better than having 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off, 3 weeks on, 1 one week off blah blah blah. People would forget what was going on or not be able to follow the storyline very well and just give up. Just knowing your show would be on that day/time without fail was helpful.
Still to have enough in the can to run nonstop like that, they STILL have to start filming in July. Usually the writers go back to writing in June. You’ll note at the late July Comic Con last year that they had already resumed filming. Once films 8-9 days per episode.
However, Once can only return in January IF they move days actually. You just can’t run straight through on Sundays because there’s too many awards shows and sporting events to pre-empt for. I think moving days/times would be a bad idea. But we’ll have to see what ABC decides.

ParticipantI don’t mind the breaks. I don’t think it has felt excessive. Maybe at first, but not once they got going. Like a break for Christmas is good or for the Superbowl even though i am not a big football fan.

ParticipantI do not mind hiatus’ either but I do not like it when after a hiatus there are three episodes then another 2 or three week break then 2 or 3 new episodes another break then the last few reamining episodes. It is understandable to have a break for Christmas and the award season or sporting events if the channel hosts it but when there are several hiatus within two months it is annoying.

I saw this on my tumblr and thought 😯 that’s a quick return date. that’s only 3 more months. has writing even started for season 2?
I read somewhere online that Kitsis and Horowitz had already started plotting for season 2 storylines and episodes when ONCE got picked up for a full season in the Dec/Jan timeframe…which delights me to no end because i know the next batch of stories and plots can only be absolutely amazing!

ParticipantI was reminded of this article http://vancouverisawesome.com/2011/12/09/yvrshoots-once-upon-a-time-is-fall-tvs-biggest-new-hit/ that I read about the production of the first season. It helps you gauge the pacing of how filming goes and why they have to start in July. (Especially since they give the actors a Christmas holiday break.)
