We all have mixed feelings regarding Season 7, but I would like to take this thread to fully focus on just the potential positives. So let’s keep the “They’re losing too many cast members, it’s gonna be terrible”, “they’ll ruin all the happy endings” or “the ratings are going to crash” nonsense out of this. We’ve already had plenty of other threads to vent about that. I’ll start:
– Having adult Henry as the new main lead. If Emma can no longer be the main lead, then a grown up Henry just seems like the most logical successor. He’s Emma’s son, and has ties to pretty much all of the characters. Not to mention, they’ve been continuously building up his importance, especially in the Season 3, 4 and 5 finales. From the cast members who are confirmed to be staying on board as regulars, there’s Regina (Henry’s adoptive mother), Rumple (Henry’s grandfather), and Hook (I guess technically Henry’s step-father?). More Henry and Rumple bonding in particular is something that many of us had been asking to see more of. There’s also much to explore, regarding what happened to Henry during the timeskip, and how his character has evolved since. Who did he meet to have Lucy? Why was he in the Enchanted Forest with Lucy in one scene, but living alone in Seattle in the other? How has being the Author effected Henry during all of this time? What is the new threat, and why does Henry’s family need him?
– Most or all of the flashbacks could take place during the timeskip between the end of the Final Battle and when we see adult Henry with Lucy. One of the biggest issues with the flashbacks for the past few Seasons has been the writers trying to squeeze them into questionable places in the timeline in ways that are either confusing, are retreads that we don’t need to see more of (*cough Regina trying to kill Snow cough*) or flat out don’t make much sense. If they were to go the route I’m suggesting, then they would be practically starting out flashbacks with a clean slate with much less restraints.
– Exploring dropped storylines for several recurring characters. What happened to Will and Anastasia? Who is Lily’s father? Who is the Dragon’s daughter? Will Mulan ever get her happy ending? What about Aurora and Phillip? What have Ruby and Dorothy been up to? The writers had considered doing an episode about a bunch of these this past Season, but they couldn’t fit it in with all of the other stories they were focusing on. However, with a truncated cast and the previous main narrative already resolved, this seems like a prime opportunity to finally tie up some of those stories. Personally, this was always one of the things that would help justify Season 7 for me.
– Introducing more stories and Disney films. They’re running out of animated Disney movies to pull from that could work, but off the top of my head I guess I’ll suggest The Princess and the Frog, Moana, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, and Atlantis. The big headscratchers would be the animal movies like The Jungle Book and The Lion King, but maybe they’d find a way around them. There are also more classic literature they could pull from, like they did for the Land of Untold Stories subplot. I know some of this could be seen as a negative, but it’s still a valid positive for some.
– I know some will definitely disagree with me, but I could see the positives of Regina, Rumple and Hook spending some time away from their significant others. That doesn’t mean that those people aren’t important to them, but they should be allowed to have lives outside of their love lives. They are their own separate people after all, and shouldn’t have a one track mind. I’m sure they could explore those characters without having to undo their happy endings, at least not in a permanent capacity. Besides, I feel the focus should be more on Henry and Lucy, while the other 3 play supporting roles this time around.

Agreed here. I’m really tired of romantic angst. I’m tired of what it does to the writing of the show and I’m tired of what it does to the fandom.
–I’m pretty intrigued by whatever is after Henry/Lucy in that first scene of the S6 finale. It seemed properly scary and after the let down that was the Black Fairy, I’d really like to see a terrifying big bad.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 19, 2017 at 8:23 am #339105hjbauParticipantI think for me the best new thing is that they are going to introduce a new good guy regular. The show hasn’t introduced a new good guy regular since Season 1. They have only introduced villains that have hung around like a plagues for too long. I don’t like that it is just villains from the original cast staying on, but i do like that we are going to get introduced to a new hero.
I am also glad that we no longer have to see Emma and Snow dangling on the arms of a guy and either barely or not at all having a storyline outside of that. I will be glad to stop seeing Belle yoyo back and forth between leaving Rumpel and going back to him even though he hasn’t really changed. I am glad that the only romance is going to be whatever happens with Henry.

This would be a fun episode that they definitely could fit in this next season.

Or exploring some characters in more depth like Archie, Grumpy, Red, Granny, Nova, Maleficent, Lily, etc.
I am most excited for new characters, new stories, and new people to care about. I would have loved if they had not brought back any of the old character regulars, but I am excited to see how this all works out.

YES! But knowing this show, Poppins is an evil witch who drugs children into seeing cartoon critters and steals their life force because she lost her own children centuries ago, and Yzma is Kuzco’s long lost sister who wants to turn him into a llama to get her rightful throne back, or something.
I am here for it!

Is it bad that I actually would be down for all of this? Lol. I think Mary Poppins as a villain could be really cool. Similar to Peter Pan. They could use the paintings in the streets as a way of jumping in and out of realms…. And Yzma just has so much personalty. You could really do a lot with her. I’m sick of bland characters like Aladdin and Jasmine. Yes, they were in a great Disney movie and had personalities but they just did not translate into tv very well at all. Yzma has so much spunk and character I feel like it could be just as successful as Cruella was.

I think they really need to work on making the new characters feel like real human beings. I am just not sure if it is possible, but the potential is there. There is still a lot of great known stories that they could dip into, but they really have to making something deep and real with the reboot.

^^^This so many times. I think the trick is this: if they’re using a familiar character (Disney princess) then they have to change/defamiliarize them, notably making them more human and flawed, but that’s where ABC/Disney will probably put their foot down, and I personally am not interested in live action remakes. And if they’re using less familiar characters, then they need time to set them up. I mean, if they could do it with Rumple, who is not exactly an iconic Disney anything, then surely they can put in the work with other sorts of recognizable, but not overly familiar characters.
One thing I would love to see is the show moving away from a ship-centric narrative, and refocusing on other relationships. There’s a point where ship angst fatigue sets in — and that point has been crossed for me 2 seasons ago. It doesn’t mean the ships have to be broken up, but one romantic angst subplot (Henry & Lucy’s mom) is plenty enough for a season. I would be perfectly content if they leave all the other pairings as they are, limit the temporal scale of S7 into a self-contained adventure, and send Regina (mom/magic user), Hook (step-dad/henchman/rogue), and Rumple (grandfather/magic user) to serve as a backup/rescue party for whatever trouble Henry got himself into. The Rumple/Regina combo has always been one of my favorite things (though please no more sexualizing it, that was horrid). But I think there’s great comic crackfic potential in having the Regina/Rumple/Hook disunfctional team/family unit going off to rescue Henry from himself. Extra points for the fact that they don’t much like each other. On that note, I’d love to see more of a Rumple/Henry dynamic, which might actually work especially well if they introduce an adult Henry and a different actor (no offense to Jared, but I’m not sure he can play a lead versus Lana and Bobby).
Also, at this point, I don’t think the show needs to plumb the tortured depths of any of these their main characters, except for Henry — it would be a lot more interesting to see how they are evolving in relation to present circumstances and challenges.
Other wishes for S7 include no more MacGuffin flora, minerals, or household objects unless there’s a really good reason for why any given MacGuffin needs to be any of these things.
Also, I don’t want a supervillain of the week big bad. Some serious world building / philosophical speculation about the nature of magic/realms/fiction/reality would be really welcome at this stage.
May 19, 2017 at 4:02 pm #339123hjbauParticipantYeah, i really wonder what they are going to do with Rumpel/Henry and Hook/Henry. Those characters don’t really have relationships. Neither Does Hook/Regina. I doubt very much they are going to have the old main characters sit in the background, as much as i might wish that, i don’t think that is going to happen.
Because of that, they really need to find something to do with those characters. If they are all cursed and have different memories for awhile and jobs and Henry is interacting with their cursed selves then that is one thing. Though, how long does that last?
It is all so weird now because i just don’t really have any clue what they are doing. It is not sustainable to just retread Season 1 exactly. At least we know that Henry will eventually end up in another realm.
