Josh Dallas, who plays Prince Charming, recently gave his take on playing two very different, yet similar, characters.
Playing two sides of the same character in different worlds is a welcome challenge for the actors. “The parts are so complex and layered,” says Dallas. “My Storybrooke character, David, is the opposite of the confident Charming, who knows what his values are. Married to a woman he feels disconnected from, David is lost and confused and unable to explain his huge love for Mary Margaret.”

but I read on another OUAT forum, David isn’t supposed to be like Charming. He’s supposed to be the exact opposite of him, so really, you’re not supposed to like him.
March 12, 2012 at 6:38 pm #138693SlurpeezParticipantI still have some reasons to root for David. Most importantly, I’m rooting for him to find Mary Margaret and make it work. He is a complex character. He seems to be the very opposite of Prince Charming in many ways because he is cursed. He is very conflicted, perhaps because he has conflicting memories between SB and FTL. Though he doesn’t want to hurt anyone, that’s all he ends up doing in SB. He has a hard time doing the right thing, because it’s very hard for him to figure out what the right thing to do is, as a result of the curse. On the one hand, he loves Mary Margaret, who really is his wife in FTL, which is the reason for his inexplicable attraction to her. On the other hand, he feels a sense of duty to Kathryn, who isn’t really his wife but is his fabricated wife in SB. He finally decides that the “right thing” is not to lead Kathryn on anymore and to let her find true love like she deserves. Kathryn seemed to come to terms with this in ep. 13 (before she disappeared). That’s why he’s going to end up in the care of Dr. Archie Hopper, a conscience, who’ll hopefully help David see what the right thing is. After ep. 15, I’m wondering what happened to make David have a “black-out” like he did when he awoke from his comma. The memory loss seemed to parallel the similar bouts of amnesia episodes Red had in FTL when in her wolf form. Also, I’m curious how Dr. Whale is involved, if at all, in David’s memory difficulties. I’m not sure whether Dr. Whale is a hero or villain now, since he isn’t a big bad wolf after all.

They are foils of each other who happen to be the same person. an example of it which is very clear is Snow and Angry Snow….we see the two in the same episode and it is very clear and distinct. They are still the same character and we see they have the potential for that extreme behavior. They way they act is not quite out of character but think of it as of your own character then take yourself into another time and then your brain becomes swiss cheese…you are still you but now with a different identity. That’s the best way to describe it without having ever experienced it myself.

I don’t dislike David, but I do wish that he would become more like his fairytale counterpart. But that’s the point of the show isn’t it? Each chaacter has been stripped of their original memories and personalites and forced to live in a brand new world. The journey is them finding their way back home. So, I still have hope for David.

It is just the point I think I am trying to reach. The more we dislike or hate him the more we can love him later. We really actually need to see the complete opposite of what a Charming guy can be and show how chivalry is over in order to appreciate how Charming chivalry is.

It’s all because of the curse. Deep inside under his cuteness, is Charming wanting to break free. I blame the curse for every mistake that David makes. He’s perfect and lovely. <3

Of course all the wrong things done by David – and other cursed characters – is somehow fault of the curse, but in the end, when the curse is broken, they’ll have to live with the knowledge of things they did. Some may not be forgiven easily. I don’t think this will be an issue with David&MM, just saying.
Anyone else think that David’s gone a few steps to being more Charming between The Return to The Stranger? He was really nice trying to help Regina (it’s not his fault he doesn’t know of her doing …) and then seeing how hurt she was – even though she acted it – and staying for her. It was kind of chivalrous. And when he talked to MM in The Return he understood that she was right with the whole “That’s what makes it all so sad.” He’s finally growing up and becoming more like himself, even though he’s still a long way to being completely so.
