While it’s clear that Belle still loves Rumple, she told him that she needs time and space to figure out where they go from here. Is this the end for Rumbelle? And where will Belle go from here?

As you said, Belle just needs time to herself to really figure all of this out. She was betrayed by Rumple too many times to instantly just forgive him. More specifically this seems like their way to write Belle out of the show for all or most of 5B while Emilie is pregnant.

Belle’s declaration, however, felt very OOC to me, and I’m rather convinced that someone was doing shenanigans with her (Hook didn’t get his actual revenge, so he just MIGHT have despite the fact that his goal was just to get Rumple’s blood.)

November 30, 2015 at 1:52 am #313217Sci-Fi GirlParticipant^ I thought exactly that Keb, in the middle of the scene. The things Belle said were very out of character. Some of it, maybe. But the way she said things, and the timing, it all just seemed off.
Especially her line about “protecting my heart”! She could have meant that literally, physically, as in “right now”! šÆ
Hook could totally have been controlling her heart. It’s been done before (keeps happening to Belle?), in a similar way. And Hook was just humiliated, he could easily have chosen to do this next to hurt Rumple as much as possible.

Though Matt, you do have a point about the *spoiler*. This would certainly facilitate that. (Though I was sure they would go the *other* route with it. Oh well.)

November 30, 2015 at 4:18 am #313227PheeParticipantI’m completely fine with it. Used to like Rumbelle together, but then they lost me, and if they’d gone with a quick fix they’d have never won me back over. Rumple being truly repentant and Belle taking time to figure herself out, allowing time for Rumple to really figure out who he is now as well, is the best way to handle the messed up situation they’d written themselves into IMO.
Even if it’s mostly just because they had to write Belle out for a bit while Emilie’s pregnant, I think it’s the best thing for their characters to spend some time apart for now.

The problem I have with this is that no one knew about the meeting. If they wanted to show that Hook was controlling Belle’s heart just then, they’d have some sort of flash to Hook taking Belle’s heart and then holding it and speaking into it so that the audience gets the full shock value. Just like they did with Regina last year.
It might have been inconsistent with Belle as a character, but none of the characters are really written consistently arc to arc and sometimes episode to episode. We also have to take into consideration that EdR is pregnant and that unlike Snow/Ginny back in S3, the writers will have no problem writing Belle/EdR out of the narrative for a bit while she’s carrying a baby. This was their way of not having to answer “where’s Belle?” questions every week in S5B.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 30, 2015 at 11:47 am #313244KebParticipantThey could easily have given Belle her normal screen time and we’d still never see her. No need to break Rumbelle up for Emilie’s pregnancy :p

November 30, 2015 at 1:18 pm #313250nevermoreParticipantWhile I don’t necessarily mind the break-up, I am not thrilled about the dialogue. It was a bit sloppy, at least on Belle’s side. If this is to be the end of Rumbelle – and I think A&E will throw at least one ship under the bus (ugh, bad metaphor, sorry),Ā andĀ if Emily needs to take maternity leave, then I would have expected an ending that would have been less… I don’t know. Cold? Ditzy? Lets say, OOC.
Either EdR’s deliver was seriously off — to the point where people feel that maybe Belle isĀ being remote-controlled — or the writing of her lines was really bizarre. I mean, I sympathize with Rumple’s question — why break up now that he’s “cured”? It made it sounds like it’s either the oldest line in the book (the ‘we need a break, it’s not you it’s me’ because she’s doesn’t want to admitĀ that she’s out of love with Rumple) or she’s essentially blaming RumpleĀ for her own decision to stick with him while he was a DO.Ā The more they are presenting the DO curse as a kind of physical/psychological affliction that changes a person’s entire personality — say, like a brain tumor — the more I find the writing of the break-up uncomfortable and problematic for how I understand Belle’s character.
On the other hand, if Rumbelle is to reunite at the end (again, I don’t think it will, but I’m a pessimist), here’s a gratuitous theory. (I’m usually wrong so take it with a grain of salt) Belle will die at the end of this half-arc and be dragged into the underworld. I think RG’s idea that the Dark Ones are going to try to come back to life by trading themselves for other “souls” is right. So Rumple’s journey then might be to go to the Underworld with Emma to get Belle back, thusĀ echoing Emma’s search for Hook. For an extra bad ending, Rumple will then take Belle’sĀ place, so she can have a chance at life, especially since this Underworld is really Hell, and Belle doesn’t deserve to be there. Rumple, on the other hand, might make the argument that he does. This, then, will complete his character’s arc. I suppose it all depends on RC’s availability with the upcoming Trainspotting 2, whether there is a S6 and whether he’ll be in it

Well it wouldn’t be the first time, or even the second time, that Hook has hurt Belle to try and get back at Rumple.
They could easily have given Belle her normal screen time and weād still never see her. No need to break Rumbelle up for Emilieās pregnancy
We also have to take into consideration that EdR is pregnant and that unlike Snow/Ginny back in S3, the writers will have no problem writing Belle/EdR out of the narrative for a bit while sheās carrying a baby. This was their way of not having to answer āwhereās Belle?ā questions every week in S5B.
If the writers have done this because Emilie is pregnant then that is really unfair to Emilie. Ginny is pregnant again so unless they plan to write Snow out too, then why can’t they have Emilie on the show whilst she’s pregnant? Isn’t there some law to protect pregnant women in the workplace so that they don’t get forced out of their job?
There are ways Emilie’s pregnancy can be written into the narrative:
1. Whilst taking some time apart from Rumple, Belle discovers she pregnant with his child.
2. Belle becomes a surrogate for some friends who want a child but can’t have one, and there is no adoption places in Storybrooke. (Bonus points if they’re LGBT)
3. I dislike this one but Belle discovers she’s pregnant with Will’s child. In 4B the writers were even dropping hints about Belle potentially becoming a mother. In the AU, Belle was baby Neal’s mother. When Belle was looking after baby Neal in Storybrooke, Charming called her a “natural” and in the deleted scene Charming basically all but asked Belle if there was going to be a RumBelle baby.
For the writers to suddenly say to Emilie “you’re pregnant so we’re going to write you out of the show until after you’ve had the kid but we’ll still let Ginny take part even though she’s in the exact same situation as you” is wrong.
Reducing Emilie’s filming schedule, ensuring she stays in the warm and/or have her sit down and stand behind things if the pregnancy isn’t being written in is one thing, but to expel her from the show just because she’s pregnant is quite another.
All magic comes with a price!
