The one thing I like most about this show is that there is no concrete “Bad” and “Good” when it comes to people (actions, yes, people overall, no). Rumple manipulated hundreds and caused the curse for a very human reason: to find his son. Regina enacted the curse because of a deep-seated pain born of a lifetime of emotional abuse from Cora. But we’ve seen both of these “bad characters” do good things. Regina is trying to be better, and we’ve seen Gold help Henry. Yet we’ve seen good people do “bad” things as well. I mean it wasn’t that long ago that Snow almost put an arrow through Mulan’s neck and left Aurrura to Cora just so she could get back to charming.
What this all boils down to to me, is empathy or the lack of.
The characters people usually characterize as “good” are able to put themselves in others position at least most of the time. In “We are both” Charming wants nothing better then to run after Jefferson so he could fix the hat and get Emma and Snow back, but he stops when Red reminds him that “the town needs him.” He puts the needs of the many above what he wanted.
Now think of all Rumple has done, much for the same reason. He wants Bae back, but in the process he has torn apart how many family? Condemning them to the same agony he felt when he let go of Bae.

But then doesn’t that become the concrete difference between the good and the bad ? whether they can put themselves in other peoples positions or not ?
December 5, 2012 at 10:23 pm #163857schmackyParticipantMorally are there a difference between bad-just as bad ?
Yes, there’s a difference. OK I’m gonna try and make it simple in the bad vs. just as bad.
Using the word “as” is a direct comparison. Saying one thing is to the same degree, amount, or extent of another thing.
For example if someone who is 6′ they can say “I am tall.” But they can’t say “I am just as tall as Tim” when Tim is 7 feet tall.
That’s the difference. Standing by while something bad happens could be a bad thing morally. But it’s not as bad as the person that committed the crime.

Okay. I see that granted. But how are we or enyone to judge how ‘bad’ somebody is…. I don’t think we can do that. I think that was my point from the start. It’s also about how alot of people say Regina (back to her example) needs to do this and this and this and THEN she will have redeemed or made amends for her actions, but seriously… we can’t be the judges of this. Thats my opinion.
December 5, 2012 at 10:42 pm #163860schmackyParticipantWhy can’t we be the judge of it? Think of a court of law. You are judged by your peers. If we don’t then who does? Does Regina herself just determine when she’s now a good hearted person? And redeemed? And deserving of things?
I think Faux Pax already answered your question on how we judge someone as bad or not…
(actions, yes, people overall, no)
It’s not so much that Regina is bad or good. Like, deep down in her soul or whatever. It’s more about her actions. Her actions have predominately been bad and therefore people classify her as bad.
Just as Snow White’s actions have predominately been good and therefore we classify her as good.
But, who is to say what is good and bad? The people. All people. All people have a right to judge the actions of others as good or bad. IMO anyway.
December 5, 2012 at 10:56 pm #163861GrimmsisterParticipantYes in your opinion. And I think that is where we will have to agree to disagree because my opinion is the oppossite. We can’t be the moral judges 🙂 We disagree, but that’s okay.

Again this is legally, where I speak of morally.
December 5, 2012 at 10:58 pm #163862GrimmsisterParticipantI have to call it a day Schmacky. Got to be able to get up in the morning.
But I thoroughly enjoyed debating with you. It was much fun. Thank you and G’night 😀December 5, 2012 at 11:07 pm #163863schmackyParticipantAgain this is legally, where I speak of morally.
No, I meant morally. As I have the entire conversation. I just meant think of it as a court of law… where you are judged by your peers. Morally, if we don’t judge then who does? Nobody?
December 6, 2012 at 12:21 am #163866elleParticipantOne of the facotrs of redemption is remorse. Sorry to say it, but I have yet to see Regina actually feel remorse for what she has done. She killed Graham, seperated Hansel and Gretal from their father, locked Belle up, and had repeatedly gone after Prince Charming and Snow White. Pretty sure that in their world, she would end up in prison or executed for her actions.
The whole Charming family has stood up for her, protected her when she needed it–not once did she thank Emma, Snow White, and Prince Charming for their actions in rescuing her. Instead, she treats them with scorn and contempt, while still expecting them to invite her into their lives.
What she has done was nice, but all she did was repay them for what they had done. If it had not been for them, her soul would have been sucked.
December 6, 2012 at 1:34 am #163875faux paxParticipantI think Regina is starting to show remorse for what her actions have costed Henry and their relationship. And that’s a start. I guess that’s why redemption is a long road.
