One of the things that I noticed when Regina went to Wonderland and was talking about the Queen of Hearts was that she seemed to be talking about her with an annoyance in her voice – not in a manner I would expect her to be speaking if she were talking about her mother. I think she feared her mother when she was young and then hated her when she was older. I don’t think there was ever a time where she was simply annoyed by her.
To be annoyed with someone I think you have to be either their equivalent in terms in status but have them challenging your position, or they need to be someone who is simply constantly driving you crazy.
My theory depends on Regina having been the one who sent Cora to Wonderland, where she set up camp as QoH. If Regina eventually gained the power to overthrow her mother, strip her of her powers, (they both use the same tricks, so I think Regina stole her initial powers from her mother), and banished her to another land, then I could totally see her attitude having evolved from being fearful of her to merely being annoyed by her.

Dunno that this is technically a spoiler because it’s just about a cast member from an already aired ep, and that info is out there for everyone to see, but just in case, I think they just had a “filler actress” for Hat Trick. So many people knew that Barbara Hershey would be playing Regina's mother in a future ep, so having her name in the credits as QoH would have blown the whole massive reveal that they're not ready to make yet. Even with her face covered and voice muffled to hide her identity, her name in the credits would NOT have gone unnoticed. Also, they wouldn't wanna pay a huge amount to Barbara if she's just gonna sit there for a few minutes and not be seen or heard in that ep, so casting a bit part actor as a stand in instead just makes good business sense. That's why, like I said, I thought the elephant appearance was a reference to “the elephant in the room”, which means something obvious that no one brings attention to by addressing it.

Truth be said this show is not these producers first rodeo; it was probably coincidental planning that there was a filler actor. They probably wanted Barbara Hershey to play Cora, whether or not they could get her on time or they were going to use that actress to play the Queen of Hearts. It case they do decide against not making Cora the QoH they can or if they do they do. Hence the covering of her face as an additional back up and you not hearing her voice. I believe with the exception of the lets say first three episodes there should not be continuity issues by the end of the season.

It may just be that this is their take on the Queen of Hearts making her quiet instead of loud just to be different. Though the dialogue where Jefferson says something like do you know what she does to people and Regina says better then most or something like that. I should look up the dialogue. It just really made it seems like Regina was referring to someone taking hearts and she does know what it is like for her mother to take a heart better then most. The thing is that when i think of what the Queen of Hearts does it is cut people’s heads off and not take people’s hearts. I still think it is a really good theory.

I think Regina has the ability to take hearts because she stole that power from Cora. So in Wonderland, Cora had to learn a new trademark trick because she can’t take hearts anymore, and started taking people’s heads instead. But because of her history of taking hearts in FTL, that’s why she chose to call herself QoH in Wonderland.
April 19, 2012 at 6:24 pm #142882hjbauParticipantThat is an interesting idea Phee. I also think that Regina took Cora’s magic though i really like the idea that Cora is the Queen of Hearts i think it is more likely that Regina killed her. Do you think that the Queen of Hearts had to have magic to keep Jefferson alive when she took his head or do people just not die there?
April 20, 2012 at 12:36 am #142917charmingParticipantHow does one graduate from taking hearts to heads though. I see the magic whether it be taken from or learned or whatever. Ripping hearts out yourself and then telling someone else to take a head is going from something very personal to wimping out and letting someone else do the dirty work you use to do. a person who before they became king or queen was use to doing something because of control issues will continue to do so after he or she becomes king or queen. Taking hearts to ordering someone else to take another’s head is relinquishing some control. They are still demonstrating power but Cora and Regina are control freaks; they take hearts and not trust another to do something of that nature due to the fact that they want it done right.

maybe the Queen of Hearts is disfigured from maybe one time battling Regina. like they had a show down at some point and the Queen of Hearts lost and fled back to Wonderland, badly scarred.
Maybe it was a spell gone awry …. or Regina turned QofH INTO AN ELEPHANT.

April 20, 2012 at 1:28 am #142930hjbauParticipantI really like the idea that Cora is the Queen of Hearts, but for some reason i do not think it is true. There are just too many issues with it. Though i think it is interesting to discuss because i like it.
April 20, 2012 at 10:32 am #142957charmingParticipantHas anyone thought of Granny being the Queen of Hearts? What do we know about Granny? as much as we know about the QoH…..right?
