I agree that if there is a mother Gothel in the tale (and there probably will be) she’s going to be someone we are already familiar with. Mal makes sense as does Regina. This is why I’m inclined to think 314 is a Snowing episode. I think Rapunzel is in the past and Snow tries to bust her out of her tower during her bandit years, cause who would understand being hunted and trapped by an evil witch better than Snow? It’s more or a less a gender swap making Snow the “Prince” who rescues Rapunzel and given that they’ve race swapped, why not? Turn all expectations on their head, I say.

If Rapunzel is being held by Regina, then that would be a pretty good fit. We’ve already had one story this season where Snow filled the role of the Prince though, which I guess could either be foreshadowing, or it could be something they wouldn’t wanna do again.

Along the lines of Rapunzel being held by Maleficent and Phillip being from her kingdom, I was thinking that perhaps he’s a knight who’s sent to save Princess Rapunzel, and during that process, maybe he discovers something that can help break the curse that Aurora’s mother has been put under, (though we don’t know where on the t-word that was supposed to have happened). So Phillip helps to save Aurora’s mother, after which Aurora falls in love with him, and then Maleficent curses Aurora as well because she hates her family, and as an added bonus it’s a revenge plot against Phillip as well.

(Unfortunately, all of this would involve a fair bit of shooting for Kristen, and considering they haven’t been able to get her to shoot even one scene in forever, it’s highly unlikely. But my imagination don’t care about scheduling logistics. :-P)

It kind of bothers me that anyone wishing that Rapunzel look like the Disney film is accused of being racist! Yes, some people are- particularly anyone being hateful about it. But with most, it’s just that they just get stuck on how they expect a character to look. I personally have never seen a version of Rapunzel in which she wasn’t blonde- and the Disney film is much beloved. I’m open to whatever Once decides to do, and the actress cast as Rapunzel is beautiful, but I can understand some disappointment that she won’t look the way we are used to. Imagine the backlash if they decided to make Tiana white!

I’m a big fan of the American Girl books and dolls. There’s one character Felicity whose best friend is a brunette girl named Elizabeth. However, when they decided to make a Felicity movie and come out with a doll version of Elizabeth, they made her blonde! They even Photoshopped the illustrations in newer editions of the books. And yes- gosh darn it- it bugged me!

That being said, of course we should all keep an open mind about Rapunzel. I trust casting. I trust Adam and Eddy, and I think we’ll get an awesome story even if Rapunzel was green!

And yes- SOME of the comments coming out of the woodworks *are* racist and mean. I am not advocating those! There is a difference between being a little disappointed and being outright cruel and close minded! There’s also a difference between disappointment and devastation.

Maleficent as Gothel COULD work…maybe. From what have seen, Maleficent seems to be a collector of perhaps magical objects that may bring others misfortune. The Curse was taken from Regina by her and I believe she said the mirror that Will and Ana used was bad, though I could be wrong? Anyway, what if Rapunzel is actually a bit of a brat? Maybe her hair can not only heal, but take away or steal a persons life force to keep herself young and ageless and beautiful? So then, Maleficent kidnaps her and locks her away in her tower.

Also, on an interesting note, Dragons have been known to collect gold and all sorts of treasures, and their caves were simply wonderlands of riches. Some were also said to have the power to shift into human form (though only at certain time points). What if Maleficent isn’t a human/fairy who can turn into a dragon…. But a dragoness who turns into a human… Just putting that out there >>

I agree Angiebelle, and it’s really not different than how we complained or would have if Ariel didn’t have red hair or that it wasn’t red enough.  That the actress cast was older than a teen bugged some viewers too, but I didn’t mind that.  I don’t recall seeing anyone complain about her complexion/heritage being Latina but of course, she is, and her costume design like that of the others presented a new spin on the traditional visuals.
So people naturally always have complained about differences versus the iconic versions from Disney in particular.   I know I’ve griped a little about Belle’s reddish tone (not that Emilie is a natural blonde).  I’ve seen people go the other way too–saying they wish they’d just let Emilie stop dying her hair and have Belle be blonde!

What matters more is how they work in the character for an exciting story, and on some level, can they capture the essence of the character from some familiar version.   With Ariel, I didn’t mind if they blended from the Andersen version at all, nor did I mind the changes they did make.   The same with the other princesses that they’ve done.  Belle is one of my favorites despite the funky accent and the reddish hair.  She loves books, is clever and kind and has the really important elements (aside from the love for her father…but I’ve brought my issues with that up elsewhere).

I hope this version has the spunk, the creativity, the open wide-eyed  love of life that Tangled versions’s had.  If they give her a chameleon (Rumple? Oh no not that!) and a purple-pink dress I’d be pleased enough, but they don’t have to bring in Flynn or Gothel versus blend them into other characters or just leave them out.

OUAT versions are always going to be alternate universe and not faithful recreations.   I mean, just look what they did with Pan!

I love that idea.   It did seem like Maleficent was sort of “protecting” the world by hoarding dangerous things.   Though its not clear she’s doing it for the sake of the world versus her own desire to hoard.

Angie and KFC, I agree but there is a difference between “oh shucks. I was hoping Rapunzel would look like the girl from Tangled. I’m a little disappointed” and “omg! how dare they give this role to an African-America! I hope Rapunzel turns out to be evil and is locked away!!! This is way over the line!” (the latter of these is not happening HERE, thank goodness, but it is happening). I know it’s a very big twist and for people who really loved Tangled it might be a bit upsetting and that’s okay. But we need to see the story before we make judgments, right? I was like 100000000% against Rumple being the Beast. I *loathed* the idea. And, well, you’ve all met me, yeah? So I get what you’re saying but out there in the wilds, things *incredibly inappropriate* are being said to both Adam and Alexandra.

RG, that stuff is just wrong, and awful, absolutely.  I now checked out tumblr and saw repeats of what was said on twitter and it is horrible, way more that the small quibbles expressed over other departures from the Disney look.

I’d say she is doing it for the sake of the land. She held back the curse from Regina for that reason. She didn’t want it used.

Maybe Rapunzels hair can be used for evil? Which goes along with my theory that her hair will be an ingredient to the new curse

Or maybe it was an ingredient in the old one?  We assumed Rumple wrote it but maybe he did not.
