The doll could be Bae’s and I could totally see Rumple making it for him after Milah left. And he could have put it in his jacket/robe in The Return and SSTR but it feels very “oh by the way, Bae had this on him the entire time…”
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 22, 2013 at 10:54 am #206244SlurpeezParticipantI now firmly believe Rumple was in NL after he became the Dark One. Not only did Felix refer to him as such in 3×1, but Rumple must’ve known in advance he would need the enchanted squid ink in order to be captured in a fortified jail cell in the EF in 1×4. Having foreseen he would need the ink, he traveled to NL where he either commissioned a mermaid or he went himself to the bottom of the ocean to seek out a squid. As an immortal, the Dark One would not need to fear drowning. That is when PP made contact with Rumple.
By the time Rumple came searching for squid ink, Baelfire was still in NL. It would create such a heart-wrenching drama if Peter Pan showed the doll to Rumple at that time. If Rumple did make the doll for his son, then he’d have recognized it. It’s entirely possible that PP spun some lie to make Rumple believe his son had been held captive but had already fled back to Earth to escape his father. Rumple very easily believed Regina when she lied about Belle’s supposed suicide. So, Rumple might easily believe PP’s lie that Baelfire was no longer in NL. Perhaps Bae was being held against his will by PP and couldn’t have contacted his father even if he wished it (which I doubt since Bae was so hurt by his dad).

That is exactly what they did with the shawl. While we did see the shawl itself in an earlier episode, when Rumple dumped potion on it to keep his memories, we never saw Bae in that shawl until the very episode in Manhattan when it became important.
They could do the same thing here. Doll is introduced. We don’t see where or what it is until later, rather than the doll being dropped in a flashback in the same episode.
To be fair, it does make more sense that we didn’t see the shawl since Rumpel’s got a shop full of stuff, while Bae just had the clothes on his back. Yet Bae was leaving the only home he’d ever known for a new world. Why wouldn’t he take a special keepsake with him? And not so strange to think you’d tuck it into your clothes, for lack of a better place, and get used to doing so after living on the streets, even after you had a home and a shelf.
At this point, there isn’t enough information to reason one way or the other really, so it comes down to what story you prefer. I like Rumple but I am more curious to see his powerful Dark One days than his pre-power life as a little boy. For one thing, RC is amazing but he cannot play a little boy. I don’t mean to disrespect GG or MJR, or the wonderful kids for their younger selves, or even Rose and Barbara, but I think as they have so many characters to serve, whenever Rumple is onscreen I want it to be RC.
Then there are all these open plot points of how Rumple discovered the curse, why did he know Bae was running and still alive and how he knew PP was to be feared by all of them. It was not just his remembered fear as a little boy. Imagine you are the powerful Dark One, all cocky and sure of your power and you meet someone you cannot push around with you magic. Something made Rumple go from the talk of the town to hiding away in the Dark Castle behind the scenes, and I think it is a better story if it isn’t just grief over Bae and focus on casting the curse, but Rumpel realizing exactly what it meant that his power had limits. Because we have seen how uncomfortable he is without his magic, so we know this is a huge issue for Rumpel.
So now he has to go back to NL, back to a place where he isn’t top dog and he has to try to get the boy who was his undoing, and gets a nasty little reminder of just how powerful PP is. That he had Bae in his clutches at one point, and Rumple was so clueless he never even guessed.

True, but despite not having seen it before, it didn’t feel random to me, and I think it’s because while we hadn’t seen Bae with the shawl previously, we had seen him wearing clothes that appeared to be made from the exact same fabric, so that shawl didn’t just come out of the blue. The doll, for me, would feel random and out of the blue if we were now told, “Oh BTW, this doll was Bae’s and he totally had it on him all those other times you saw him.”

Yep. Here’s hoping the freaking doll’s origin is addressed in 304 if not before, so we can all be put out of our misery. 😛
August 22, 2013 at 12:24 pm #206252RumplesGirlKeymasterI think both arguments for Rumple’s doll and Bae’s doll are really solid.
I will say this though. The fact that the doll keep reappearing and that RC tweeted his little mystery tweet about it would suggest that it is more important to the storyline than just a keepsake, Bae’s or otherwise. Thus far, those who are who are on team Bae think that it’s a keepsake from his time in FTL or even in NL and nothing more. But, IMO, if that were the case, would it really be built as such a mystery at this point? Which is why I think it’s Rumple’s doll.
But, to argue against myself (lol), I could also say that Rumple is carrying it around as a reminder of what he lost because he knows it belonged to Bae.
But you’re right on the whole: there is no solid evidence one way or the other about the owner of the doll. It’s all “what story do you prefer?”
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 22, 2013 at 12:33 pm #206258SlurpeezParticipantWhat if the doll belonged to Rumple as a boy and it was his happy thought (maybe his mother made it for him)? Rumple spent time in NL as a child but returned to the EF, grew up, got married and fathered Baelfire. Then, Rumple gave his childhood doll to his son, and it became Baelfire’s keepsake. Bae carried it in his cloak in “The Return” believing he’d never see his home in the EF again. Bae had it with him in his bathrobe when he was in London and with him the night he left for NL with the shadow. Bae kept it close to him in NL, since it was the only thing he had to comfort him from his father, before Rumple became the Dark One.
Flash-forward to when Rumple comes to NL in search of squid ink (which was the hint in the NY Times crossword puzzle for 3×4). Rumple deals with whatever “nasty business” is involved in getting the ink. That is when he again met Peter Pan, who presented him with the doll. Started out of his senses, Rumple immediately recognizes the doll and demands to know how PP has the doll. PP then taunts Rumple, his old enemy, that he 1) has recently had Baelfire within his reaches but 2) allowed Baelfire to return to Earth. Grief-striken, Rumple returns home to his Dark Castle and shuts himself away, consumed by the urgency of needing to unleash the Dark Curse, believing his son will now surely die in a world where people age.

I’m leaning in this direction as well. Who wants the Dark Curse cast more than Rumple? Probably Peter Pan.
So the doll belong to both of them? That’s might be a good solution. And if Rumple didn’t know for sure that Bae was in NL when he went there to get the squid ink, the doll is confirmation to him that his son was right under his nose the whole time.

Brilliant. Yes, hence why Mr. Gold was sobbing his eyes out in 3×1 when he realized Bae was there in NL at the exact same time he was.

August 22, 2013 at 3:39 pm #206283PriceofMagicParticipantI think Felix was mocking Rumple when he called him “Dark one” The Dark one is meant to be fearsome and there was poor Rumple sobbing his heart out and not being very dark or fearsome.
All magic comes with a price!
