While I think that Regina has suspected who Emma ever since episode 2, I don’t think that Regina confirmed it in her mind until episode 7 in which Emma caused Graham to remember his FTL identity. Also, I think what further confirmed it was when Emma found out that Regina framed Mary Margaret. Regina, who already suspected Emma’s identity, probably thought, “She must be Snow White’s daughter.” Regina has been able to read the signs, like MM awakening David from a comma, the tower clock starting, the mines collapsing, and Graham remembering. Regina isn’t always smart enough to avoid bad deals with Rumpel, but she is at least clever enough to figure out Emma is the savior. I think the reason the writers didn’t reveal it until now is because as viewers, we’ve been seeing things mostly form Emma’s point of view in SB. We tend to discover things about the town at the same rate Emma does. We’ve only seen the true motives of Regina in episode 18 and the motives of Mr. Gold in episode 19. As audience members, we’re just beginning to see the bigger picture, as is Emma.

Having Regina just say it though like that. That she has known all along. That is the sort of thing that makes me think the writers are flying by the seat of their pants. If Regina has always known then why hide that information from the audience and then just throw it out there as if it was always known?
I like the explaination phee gave. It makes sense. But I agree with you Heather. The way they suddenly revealed SO MUCH makes me feel like theyre making it up as they go along too.

Agreed…It seems like this wold be something they’d ease into each new episode, but wham all at once was very odd to me. ❓

She not blind either she can see things changing around her when Emma came to town. She did retain her FTL memories and she does have eyes all over town. She had Sidney spy for her, Dr. Whale seems to be working for her too and who knows how many others are spying for her.

I just do not get why the writers just decided to throw it out there in the second to last episode instead of using this throughout the entire season. Like why didn’t we see the moment when Regina figured it out. I would have liked to have seen that. And if it was in Ep 2 when she was talking to Gold by the apple tree then why was it never mentioned again. I just think that they could have used the fact that she knew all along in a better way. Which makes me think that they just decided when they were writing this episode that they would just have Regina know so they could have the finale they wanted.

I think if you re-watch the episodes, Regina makes subtle hints regarding Emma’s arrival to SB and things changing, Emma causing trouble (for Regina anyway). I’m thinking Henry’s outburst of good winning might have been the clincher. Henry went to find Emma after all and brought her to SB, he has the book and believes in the curse. Regina knows Henry knows and believes in the curse and that he wants it broken. That scene between Regina and Henry is the first where Henry tells her straight out what he thinks. His only mistake is that he doesn’t know that Regina knows about the savior.

It’s possible that there was a scene from this episode or an earlier one in which Regina connects the dots of exactly who Emma really is. Nevertheless, I actually liked how the writers decided to portray Regina speaking as if she’s known for a long time exactly who Emma is. It makes it much more suspenceful for the viewers to be left questioning how much she’s known and for how long. I think this may have actually been deliberate on the part of the writers. I think it makes it more interesting to show that hey, Regina’s a lot smarter than we’ve perhaps thought all along. It’ll make it very interesting to re-watch the episodes knowing that Regina’s knows. There are probably hints all over the place that show she is putting together the pieces of the puzzle.

Even August admitted to Emma that he fudged some details to keep her identity a secret but apparently, he didn’t do such a good job b/c Regina still put the pieces together.

I would have liked to have seen Regina’s face the moment she realized that her adopted son was Snow’s grandson. That would have been a great moment. Maybe we will see that moment (flashback) in season two.
