Did anyone else notice that Regina was not wearing as much black, gray, and blood-red accent tonight as she usually has in Storybrooke? She was wearing black pants but a light blue shirt when she took Henry’s call. Could this symbolize that she really is trying to move away from evil (but still has a long, long way to go)?

As well as Lana Parilla plays Regina in her most evil moments, I think it’s even more interesting to see her ability to generate a little sympathy for the villain. I’m hoping they’ll keep moving the character a little more toward redemption. A Regina who is capable of love and struggling to do the right thing, but still carrying that infamous temper and ready to hurl fireballs if she is pushed just a little would be an even more fascinating character than the all evil Regina.

She was so eager to see Henry when she got that phone call, that i could almost feel sorry for her when he stood her up. I understand that he did it because he is desperate to help save Emma and Snow, but I’m hoping we get to see him apologize to her for that deception in a future episode. Not that I want or expect him to immediately forgive her for all the terrible things she has done; just to acknowledge that he didn’t mean to hurt her.

That’s a great point! I would also love to see Regina show her good side. She did seem really eager to see Henry and I kind of felt bad for her that she got stood up. She also showed good judgement by sending Charming into the mausoleum and not going herself. I am really interested to see if Cora gets to Storybrooke and whether or not Regina will fight to protect Henry and everyone else from her mother (I am thinking she will).

Agreed about wanting to see Regina show her good side. Good catch about her wardrobe, TimeSpacer! I did feel bad for her when Henry stood her up. She had looked so hopeful when talking to him on the phone. 🙁

I think Regina is afraid to face herself. She knows that she can change, but doesn’t know what to do with the guilt she would feel due to what she has done to everyone. Also, as mentioned, Regina has a lot of pain that hasn’t been dealt with. Being able to create unhappy endings allows her to chanel rage, and gives her a purpose that ignores her true emotions.

Secondly, Regina might feel that her book is only way that she can protect herself from a town bent on revenge. If/when Cora enters the picture, Regina would fight back, either due to fear, or the desire to be free of her mother’s influence. Since Cora is so powerful, the logical way to do so would be to use magic to counter magic.

Third, Regina loves magic. When she used the book to heal the tree, it seemed to have some kind of physical affect on her that she enjoys. Regina is lonely and feeling unloved by others, but magic does something for her.

All this said…would chasing redemption bring about Regina’s death? In order to face herself, she would have to stop using magic for a certian amount of time. If she doesn’t have magic, Regina’s a target or under her mother’s finger. However, if Regina becomes more evil thought magic, she might become more like her mother.
