Upon rewatching episode 1×11, I caught an interesting conversation between Regina and Emma, which could be a foreshadowing of what happened later on in S1. In the opening scene, Regina comes across Emma and Henry at the storm-hit playground where Emma and Henry usually met.

Regina: You’re not thinking about Henry or his safety, just ways around me. Miss Swan, don’t let feelings cloud your judgement. People can get hurt.
Emma: What’s that supposed to mean?
Regina: You’re the sheriff now. It’s time to be responsible.

We repeatedly saw Emma’s judgement be clouded by her emotions when she foolishly trusted Sidney Glass. She wanted to get the upper hand over Regina, because she felt Regina was taking away Henry’s happiness. She was unable to tell Sidney was lying to her when he said he wanted revenge against Regina. When Emma and Sidney hacked Regina’s computer, Emma thought Regina was using town funds for personal property. Emma was unable to tell that she’d walked straight into Regina’s trap. Regina planted the file for Sidney to lead Emma towards. Next, we saw Emma accuse Regina of embezzlement in the town hall meeting. Of course, Regina was a step ahead when she unveiled her plans for a new playground in an attempt to win Henry’s favor.

In the case of Mary Margaret being framed for murder, Emma struggled to crack the case on her own. First, she misplaced her trust in Sidney, who she later discovered was working for Regina the entire time and planting false evidence about David.

Also, when it came to August saying he would not lie to her in 1×18, Emma didn’t believe him until she broke the vase Sidney had given her and she discovered he’d been bugging her. Again, Emma had let her emotions cloud her judgement. This time, they were possibly emotions for August, as well as those for Mary Margaret’s uncertain fate. Emma then had no other option but to turn to Mr. Gold for help.

A lot of people wondered how Emma could let this happen, since she has a “super power” to know when people are not telling the truth. Jennifer Morrison later explained in an interview that Emma was experiencing emotions for Mary Margaret, Henry, and August, which were all very new to Emma. All of these emotions were throwing Emma off her game, since she was used to relying on her impartial judgement as a bail bonds person. In other words, Emma didn’t take Regina’s threat seriously enough.

And it is sort of crazy for Emma to think that Regina would set up Mary Margaret. Without really believing Mary is Snow White then there is no motive as to why Regina would do this. I mean it really is that Regina is playing this whole game that Emma is completely unaware of so Emma has no chance of making the right move. That is why it is really disappointing to me that they didn’t tell us, the audience, that Regina knew who Emma was. That could have been great.
