In the season 4 premiere, Robin told Regina that he was once like her: a dark past that he has to overcome.
What…exactly did that entail?
Here’s a reminder about what we know concerning Mr. Hood
–At least 10 years before the Curse, we know Robin was in a tavern with friends the night Regina saw him for the first time.
–At least 4 years before the curse (and probably earlier) Robin Hood was living in the forest as an outlaw, with his Merry Men, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. At the behest of Will Scarlett, Robin and his men stole from Maleficent. At this point, Robin was not married to Maid Marian, and probably did not know her.
–At least 3 years before the Curse, Robin Hood has met Marian, fallen in love and conceived a child. Marian is sick and Robin breaks into the Dark Castle and tries to steal a wand from Rumple. He is locked up but released by Belle. He heals Marian with the wand and they flee together.
–A short time after this, Marian has her baby boy Roland but is taken by Regina when Marian refuses to give up Snow White. In timeline A, Marian is killed by Regina. in Timeline B, Emma and Hook take Marian to Storybrooke where Marian is reunited with Roland and with Robin.
–Marian is either dead or missing depending on timeline. Regina casts the first Dark Curse; Robin and his gang are trapped inside the Bubble with Cora until time begins to move again.
–Robin meets Neal and help him escape via Shadow-Express.
–A short time later, Snow and company are transported to the EF through Regina’s counter-curse where Robin and Regina meet.
Drawing from the legend: Robin Hood is often thought to be a landed noble who fought alongside King Richard the Lionheart during the Third Crusade. Most legends have Robin and the King on good terms.
SO: what is this Dark Past the Robin alluded to, one that was equal to Regina’s?

Really? Didn’t RH warn Will about magic, saying he lost a loved one because of it….or something?
I think basically Robin was just a really petty thief who stole for his own selfish reasons. He probably even killed a guy or two to get what he wanted, following absolutely no code whatsoever. Something happened later down the road, maybe he fell in love with Marian knowing this show, that maid he want to change and so instead of abandoning his skills and ya know, getting a job, he used his thievery to steal from the rich and give to the poor and all that jazz.
I refuse to believe that RH was once a full on bad guy, just can’t see it.

Nope. He was against Will using whatever he stole from Mal to help a loved one. Meeting Marian came later.

But whatever he did, he equates to being akin to Regina–who has done some pretty bad things. More than just petty thievery.

I know it’s totally crack headcannon, but I want Robin to have been as bad as Regina, so I can accept their relationship. It also may explain why he is ok with Rumple torturing him and with Regina trying to kill Marion in the past, and why he so rigid about having a code. Without the code he is afraid he will turn back into a monster.
Keeper of Hook and Emma's smoldering first kiss, a certain Pirate's sauciness, the Evil Queen's snarkiness, Grumpy's gruffness and a drop of true love to make it all go down smooth.

For all we know he could have just been the selfish stuck up noble/richman from legend. He always introduces himself as Robin of Locksley (only other people call him Robin Hood) so I would assume that somewhere his family is part of the landed gentry. And he does have that rampant lion on his arm, which is usually a symbol of nobility/royalty (and very close to Leopold’s crest). I don’t necessarily read that line as him having a ‘dark past’. Maybe he worked for a dodgy king, perhaps his family was dodgy and he wanted to change.
If one is to engage with the primordial forces of darkness, one must expect a little social awkwardness

He seems to equate whatever he did in his past as being equal to Regina.

Robin called Regina “bold and audacious”, so I doubt a bit his judgment in things. If he implies, whatever he was in the past is in some way alike to what Regina has done, then it still could be rather being “just” some reckless and selfish jerk. Dark past can be something relative.

Helpful to have the scene. He says he used to be quite different. We know him now as the Prince of Thieves, robbing from the rich to give to the poor which is always held up as something honorable. So…before he became Robin Hood, what is he talking about?
It’s possible that he was just another arrogant guy who didn’t care about the poor, I guess.

*googles*“It’s just difficult because he knows [Regina] is a dark person. He knows about her past but he also says ‘I have a dark past too,'” actor Sean Maguire tells Zap2it at the “Once Upon a Time” season premiere party.
Who knows if he was basing that comment on something more he’s learned about Robin since they shot the premiere, or if he just randomly chose it as a general term. I would hope though that if they’re trying to have him identify with Regina’s past, that he’s got something legit dark in his own past.

Thanks for that . Knew I had read it somewhere.
He might be exaggerating but it also seems to line up with his “I was once quite different” emphasis on the degree of his difference.
